There is an active shooter currently inside the Garden State Plaza, according to the Police Department.

It was not known whether there were any injuries.

A law enforcement source said the gunman was “dressed in all black body armor. Numerous shots were fired. Perp was last seen near the Apple Store in the mall.”

The source also said there are reports the suspect is shooting out security cameras.
Eduardo Bermudez, who works at Joe’s American Bar & Grill in the mall, told Fox 5 he heard the shots and that there might be “two shooters, one with a biker’s jacket and on with a black leather jacket.”

Bermudez said that people were frisked as they left the mall.
Police are not sure if the shooter or shooters are still inside.

PARAMUS N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Police responded in force Monday evening, as an active shooter was reported on the rampage at the Westfield Garden State Plaza Mall.

Police sources told WCBS 880′s Steve Scott there was still an active shooter at the mall as of 10:15 p.m. No details about injuries were immediately available.

Scott initially reported sources said people had been hit, but it was not immediately confirmed whether anyone was.

A SWAT team was seen storming the mall as of just before 10:30 p.m.

Shots were fired inside the mall beginning sometime before the mall in Paramus, N.J. closed for the night at 9:30 p.m.

The man firing the shots was reportedly walking around in full body gear and a helmet, with an assault rifle.

An estimated 200 police units were on the scene, and a mass-casualty unit was required.
A witness tweeted that a shooting happened “over by Nordstrom on the second floor.”
As of 9:50 p.m., the mall was on lockdown, people inside confirmed to CBS 2.

“I was at the mall, and I saw a bunch of people running a bunch of people yelling, ‘There’s a shooting! There’s a shooting!” said Joseph Elfar, a Rutgers student. “So me and my friend were at the Sprint store, and we start running out. We start running towards the exit, and a lot of people were running out the mall.

“As I was closing the store, I heard these loud fire-cracking noises. I never heard a gunshot before,” Adam, an employee at the Michael Kors store, told WCBS 880. ” … I had a customer that shopped before, and she was running back into the store and saying, ‘Someone has a gun.’ So automatically, I … started locking the gate and told the staff to go to the back with the customers even in the store.”

While her claim has not been confirmed, one mall employee told 1010 WINS there may have been more than one shooter.

“There was two people in armored suits with AK-47s just going around shooting people randomly,” she said.

An employee also told 1010 WINS she was locked in the basement of the mall.
Anyone near the junction of Routes 4 and 17 was advised to stay inside.

Ahh, the old multiple Ak-47s in the mall thing again.

Business must be slow.

This is why we need armed TSA in our malls and stores.

See, first the LAX incident, now this - common sense would dictate that we have armed TSA agents nearby to keep us safe. Backscatter machines at the entrances would have prevented this as well. Please Barack - save us from ourselves and each other !!

Garden State Plaza shooting suspect identified, Teaneck family questioned

UPDATE: Investigators have spoken with the mother and questioned the brother of a 20-year-old Teaneck man wanted in the shooting at the Garden State Plaza in Paramus last night.

Meanwhile, two teams of five SWAT team members continued to search the surrounding woods deep into the night, and a second NJSP helicopter with a searchlight was above the mall, relieving the previous unit.

Authorities identified the suspect from surveillance video and other sources as 5-foot-11-inch Richard Shoop, a pizza deliveryman who fenced at Teaneck High School and has a small online modeling portfolio.
According to a family member, he’d been suicidal lately, sources said.
The Star-Ledger reported on Nj.com (http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2013/11/nj_mall_shooting_police_raid_house_of_possible_sus pect.html) that a “swarm of law enforcement officers, including New Jersey State Police,” raided the Shoop family’s Emerson Avenue residence shortly before 1 a.m.
“A mix of officers in tactical uniforms and plain clothes — all with guns drawn — moved through the neighborhood and knocked on the door,” the site says.
“A man holding a screwdriver answered the door and the law enforcement officers screamed: ‘Drop it! Drop it!’
“The man fell to his knees outside the house and dropped the screwdriver. He said his wife and dog were still inside.”

No injuries were reported in the shooting, which occurred around 9:20 last night, roughly 10 minutes before closing, when the gunman — wearing what witnesses said was a black leather jacket and pants, a backpack and a motorcycle helmet with the visor open — fired shots from a long-barreled gun into the ceiling on the second level of the mall’s Nordstrom wing.
“The weapon has not yet been recovered,” Paramus Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said just after midnight. “[T]here are no reported injuries.”
The incident came hours before the midnight release of “Call of Duty: Ghost,” the latest version of the intensely popular first-person shooter game. GameStop, which planned a special 12 a.m. event, has a store at the mall.
A massive response included hundreds of officers from the New Jersey State Police, the Bergen County Police SWAT, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office’s tactical unit, dozens of local agencies — even the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police — as well as The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey emergency response team, New Jersey Transit Police’s Emergency Services team and the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department.
Agents from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security were also on-scene.
An unmarked police car crashed into a divider during the early rush. No serious injuries were immediately reported.
A source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT that police found one shell casing near the elevators near Entrance 7 and the other near the California Pizza Kitchen. One is believed to have been fired by a law enforcement officer.

Authorities believe the shooter left through Nordstroms after the incident. However, they were being cautious in holding people back while they investigated. Although several people were escorted to safety in a fire drill-styled evacuation, hundreds more apparently remained inside as 1 a.m. neared.
Others were being interviewed at a command post.
A staging area was set up for those picking up friends and loved ones at the mall, which had been on lockdown past 12:30 a.m.
A news conference will be held during the early morning hours at the pavilion at the Paramus baseball complex next to the mall, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said. The time hadn’t been determined as of 1:15 a.m. The mall will be closed today.

Comments to bold highlights;

* the kid was suicidal lately - I wonder if he was on any psychotropic meds??
* I'm sure if I was at a house with a bunch of my gang buddies, we're all wearing bullet proof vests and pointing our guns at the homeowner at 1 AM, I'd be terrified if that person was holding a screwdriver
* Apparently a black leather jacket and motorcycle helmet now constitute body armor
* The suspect kills himself with his own weapon, which can't be found ?? I guess he hid it after he killed himself
* Thank God the parkway police and NY port authority showed up, I hope code enforcement and the state's animal control unit made it to the party
* Agents from the FBI and DHS were on the scene - I'll bet they were
* A police car crashed into a divider - no doubt roid rage combined with paranoia getting the best of the driver
