Travel chaos as power cut hits London
Tube travellers were stuck underground tonight after a power cut hit London.
London Underground said the power failure was having a "serious" impact on the whole of the network. Rail services from major stations including Victoria, London Bridge and Waterloo were also affected.
A Tube spokesman said: "There has been a National Grid failure which has affected the underground. At the moment we are assessing the impact of that but it is having a serious impact on the whole system at the moment."
He added: "It's also having an effect on some of our buildings. Certainly quite a lot of the network appears to be affected."
He said the failure happened around 6.15pm and there were likely to be a number of people stuck underground.
He added: "There will be travellers underground. I don't know the extent of that yet. It's at the end of rush hour, the peak period, so it's a busy time."
A spokesman for electricity network operator EDF Energy said: "We have lost supplies to large parts of south London in the last few minutes as a result of a National Grid failure supply in the south London area.
"It's difficult to predict how long this is going to take. National Grid has got to get the circuit back."
A spokesman for British Transport Police said the power cut had affected all major railway stations in south London.
"There is no power in a lot of stations and no trains running in the whole of south London," he said.

Rather alarmist title, if the Tube's power is out & not all of London..... but not seeing any other reports of this anywhere on the MSM, which seems odd to me.

Too funny. GSUSers are all thrilled about Bitcoins but never stop and realize that when the power grid goes down nobody can transact their Bitcoins.

You mean like the money on your debit and credit cards?
It's not gone just not accessible. Unless I have cellular service then I still can get to some of mine.
This is such a weak argument. If there is no power grid there are a lot of other things worse to worry about then not having access to Bitcoins

OK Jewboo,
So you don't have a bank account, creditcards, stocks, or any other paper investments?
If you have any of those then it's a bit hypocritical to point fingers.

Think of the flip-side though. The power grid goes down around the globe for a few weeks due to a solar flare, war, or whatever. When it comes back no one will have access to their bank accounts. They will be in limbo for months, or more likely, many people will never see their money again and if they do it will be highly devalued because the financial system will need to "reboot" or so they will say. On the other hand, as the internet comes back online, the longest block-chain will have established itself within days and people's bitcoin will be available almost immediately. Holy crap would the price go up after that. So a power outage could potentially be a huge boost for bitcoin. The main way people will get burned is if they accept bitcoins before the final blockchain has reestablished itself.

By the time power is restored in this scenario, everything worth owning will already have been purchased by the $1.22 trillion in FRNs in global circulation. During the outage, precious metals would lose 80% of their nominal value as measured by FRNs, but they would maintain their current buying power. For instance, a full tank of gasoline may cost 6 FRNs, or two ounces of silver. Silver would be $3/ounce.
When the power is restored, the world would be awash in digital fiat currency, but it will have been exposed for the fraud it is. It would still be used, but finally take a back seat to precious metals as a store of wealth.

EBT card food stamp recipients ransack Wal-Mart stores
Stealing carts full of food during federal computer glitch
October 14, 2013
When the federal EBT food stamp system suffered a critical failure on Saturday, local retailers were disconnected from the federal food stamp database that keeps track of how much credit is left on each individual EBT card. Seizing the opportunity provided by the glitch, EBT card holders in Louisiana ransacked their local Wal-Mart stores, stuffing their shopping carts full of groceries and “paying” for them with near-empty EBT cards that essentially had unlimited account balances because all accounting was offline.
