Police were no strangers to the secluded home of Steven J. Bell.
They had made numerous visits to the white house up the winding Hilltop Road Extension in rural Rensselaer County for what they described as family-related issues.
They were back there Monday — and Bell was not.
The 38-year-old man was shot to death miles away by state troopers during a confrontation in a remote section of dark forest where police say Bell threatened them and appeared to draw a weapon.
Two troopers fired because they believed deadly physical force against them and others was "imminent," a State Police statement said.
However, police said, no weapon was found on the man.
