A friend of mine is in charge of the computer systems at his company. He said his network was infected this week, and it came with a message that said a remedy key would be sent to the company as soon as the company provided $300 in Bitcoin within 48 hours. After 48 hours, the ransom would increase to $4000. He said the pirates had already set up a web site for the company to go in and make their Bitcoin payment.

Yep.. Cryptolocker... Nasty little bugger. It encrypts certain files and folders and then demands a ransom before it will unlock them. It uses AES-256 for encryption so you probably won't be able to brute force crack it within your lifetime...

Do not run something you do not trust (goes for websites too)
Make backups... OFTEN Cannot stress that enough.
