The Obama administration feared an Israeli airstrike on Iran more than it feared Iran building a nuclear weapon, and that's why it pushed for a deal to reduce sanctions against Iran, former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton writes in The Weekly Standard (http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/abject-surrender-united-states_768140.html?page=1).

"Buying time for its own sake makes sense in some negotiating contexts, but the sub silentio objective here was to jerry-rig yet another argument to wield against Israel and its fateful decision whether or not to strike Iran," Bolton writes. "Obama, fearing that strike more than an Iranian nuclear weapon, clearly needed greater international pressure on Jerusalem."

Israel knows it was the target of the Geneva negotiations that produced the deal early Sunday morning in Europe, he said. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the deal a "historic mistake." (http://www.newsmaxworld.com/MiddleEast/israel-iran-nuclear-talks/2013/11/24/id/538311)

The six-month temporary agreement will serve only to harden international opinion against Israeli military action, Bolton said.

Israel has repeatedly maintained that Iran's nuclear goal is to obliterate the Jewish state and has vowed to take action to prevent that from happening. An Israeli airstrike in 1981 took out a nuclear reactor in Iraq, and another in 2007 destroyed a reactor in Syria.

Netanyahu has long said Israel has the right to act in its own defense, implying it is willing to launch strikes against Iran or any other hostile nation in its region attempting to build a nuclear weapon.

"The Iranian regime is committed to Israel’s destruction, and Israel has the right to defend itself, by itself," Netanyahu told his cabinet. "Israel won’t let Iran develop military nuclear capability."

Iran will continue to move forward with its nuclear program in the shadows, Bolton said. If Israel waits it will be more difficult to take effective action, he warned.
An Israeli strike during the six-month deal would doubtless spark outrage, Bolton said, but it would spark the same condemnation – if not more – later. He urged the Netanyahu government to not fall prey to "the psychological warfare successfully waged so far by the ayatollahs."
"An Israeli military strike is the only way to avoid Tehran’s otherwise inevitable march to nuclear weapons, and the proliferation that will surely follow," he writes.
Bolton has repeatedly called (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/ex-un-envoy-john-bolton-israel-attack-iranian-nuclear-plant-late-article-1.206888) on Israel to attack Iran's nuclear facilities at least as far back as 2010.

There is "no question" that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is prepared to order a military strike on Iran if necessary, his former national security adviser Yaakov Amidror told The Financial Times in London (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/481f39fe-4f95-11e3-b06e-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2ldlFh0qz).

Strategist Efraim Inbar, who directs the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar Ilan University, wrote Nov. 21 (http://besacenter.org/perspectives-papers/strike-iran-complex-possible/) that "An Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear infrastructure is a risky and militarily complicated endeavor, but within reach. Israeli ingenuity and determination could lead to a great operational and political success."

Inbar said that "the number of facilities that would need to be hit to deal a significant blow to Iran's nuclear infrastructure is generally overestimated."

"At a time when appeasing Iran seems to be in vogue, an Israeli strike could invigorate elements in the international arena who are unwilling to accept an Iran with a nuclear breakout capability" and remind people that "muscular reactions to evil regimes are often truly necessary," Inbar added.

The New York Times reported (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/25/world/middleeast/israeli-leaders-decry-iran-accord.html?hp&_r=0) that Amos Yadlin, a former Israel Air Force general and chief of military intelligence who now directs the Institute of National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, said that Jerusalem needs to be ready for a military strike if sanctions peter out, leaving Iran's economy stronger and its nuclear weapons program intact.

Meanwhile, Israeli intelligence will be monitoring Iran's compliance with the Geneva deal.

The Israelis will be watching the thoroughness with which international inspectors carry out their visits of Iran's nuclear facilities, whether construction is halted at the heavy-water reactor in Arak, as required, and whether Tehran brings new centrifuges online or employs advanced centrifuges in breach of the deal.

Secretary of State John Kerry told CBS News (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/25/business/media/signs-of-change-in-news-mission-at-bloomberg.html?hp&_r=0&pagewanted=print) that it was not accurate — as Tehran is claiming — to say that Iran's right to enrich uranium has been enshrined.

Jonathan Spyer, a scholar at Herzliya's Interdisciplinary Center, envisages a "carefully timed injection of intelligence-derived information into the public space" in an effort by Israel to keep the next phase of the Geneva talks honest.

Israeli analysts are convinced that Iran is unalterably committed to a nuclear weapons program even if Tehran shows no intention of immediately completing the project. "I think this deal makes an Israeli strike inevitable," journalist and author Yossi Klein Halevi said (http://www.breitbart.com/InstaBlog/2013/11/24/Halevi-Iran-Deal-Makes-an-Israeli-Strike-Inevitable).
