Santa Clarita, California (CNN) -- Actor Paul Walker, who shot to fame as star of the high-octane street racing franchise "Fast & Furious," died Saturday in a car crash in Southern California. He was 40.

Walker's publicist Ame van Iden confirmed his death, but said she could not elaborate beyond statements posted on Walker's official Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Walker was a passenger in a friend's car and both were attending a charity event for his organization, Reach Out Worldwide, in the community of Valencia in Santa Clarita, about 30 miles north of Hollywood.

The website for the charity said the Saturday event was intended to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

The crash took place about 3:30 p.m. (6:30 p.m. ET), about 300 yards from the office park where the event was held.

The Santa Clarita Valley Signal, citing a sheriff's deputy at the scene, said a red Porsche appeared to have lost control.

Deputies arrived at the scene to find a vehicle on fire, the sheriff's department said in a statement.

Once fire crews put the flames out, they found two occupants, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene.

Saturday evening, all that remained was the burnt mangled metal of the car and a light pole that had been knocked down.

Box office success

Walker's career began on the small screen, first with a commercial for Pampers when he was 2, and then with parts in shows such as "Highway to Heaven" and "Touched By An Angel."

His first few movie roles were as supporting characters in teen flicks, most notably in "Varsity Blues."

His career really took off when he was cast as undercover cop Brian O'Conner infiltrating a street-racing gang in 2001's "The Fast and the Furious."

The box-office success of the surprise summer hit yielded numerous sequels. And along with Vin Diesel, Walker was one of the franchise stalwarts.

At the time of his death, Walker was working on the seventh film of the franchise, due out next year.

On his verified Twitter account, Walker described himself as "outdoorsman, ocean addict, adrenaline junkie ... and I do some acting on the side."

Walker also is the star of "Hours," an independent film scheduled to be released December 13 about a father struggling to keep his newborn infant alive in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

Twitter and other social media exploded with reactions to Walker's death.

"Completely numb and saddened to hear of the tragic death of Paul Walker," wrote one posted "Wow."

Hollywood condolences came from Will Smith, Jack Osbourne, DMX and others.

"No, @RealPaulWalker. No. No. No," tweeted actress Alyssa Milano. Walker guest-appeared with her in the 80s comedy, "Who's The Boss?" "Rest with the angels. You. Sweet boy. #beauty #love #RIP."

Looks like they were rolling up to the party a little bit too fast & too furious.

All the articles say the car lost control. Could it have been the driver that lost control?
Now it's cars and guns that kill.

Paul Walker with his 15 year old daughter.

I have a pic like that with my daughter... I'm not much older than he was, and my daughter not much older than her.

It's recent... just like this one.

Makes me think of how my daughter would feel if it was me who died.

I generally don't give a shit what happens to the Hollyweird crowd, but this story somehow hits home.

Same here. Im the same age with a daughter the same age. I also often drive these mountain roads faster than I should and engage in reckless behaviour that lands me in the ER or urgent care. I'm slowly learning I don't have to alaays be pushing the envelope to feel alive. I hope the lesson takes before my card is pulled.

Same here, I never knew him personally. But made me think of my own daughter since he wasn't much older than me and how she would feel if I didn't come home from work one day.

I personally am getting tired of your baseless, judgmental bullshit posts.

This man was SUPPOSEDLY a "Christian" Assuming this is true as a NON Christian you have NO SAY!!

As a Christian he is suppose to LEAD a life HONORING to the Lord Jesus Christ.

I personally did not watch any of his movies but even a cursory review of what they contain are WORLDY, CRANAL and no doubt contain filthy language, profanity and I suspect at least some partial nudity. Not to mention the lifestyles being promoted which consist of VIOLENCE!!

If you think God is pleased with one of HIS children living a lifestyle like he did is going to END well, you're deluded. If you're NOT SAVED, you're going to hell!!

If this man was saved, he, at least is in heaven now (NO rewards, sadly) but, even so, this is WAY better off than you will be if you die unsaved!!

Autopsy blames impact and fire for actor Paul Walker's death

Los Angeles (CNN) -- "Fast & Furious" star Paul Walker (http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/30/showbiz/actor-paul-walker-dies/index.html) may have initially survived a horrific car crash but died moments later of a combination of injuries from the impact and the resulting fire, according to a coroner's report.

The one-page preliminary report released by the Los Angeles County coroner's office Wednesday listed the cause of the actor's death as the "combined effects of traumatic and thermal injuries."

An autopsy concluded that Roger Rodas (http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/03/us/walker-crash-roger-rodas/index.html), who was driving the red Porsche Carrera GT, suffered "multiple traumatic injuries," but it was not clear in the report if he was still alive when the car burst into flames soon after the wreck.

Since two different doctors did the separate autopsies, the difference in the description of their injuries does not mean the deaths were significantly different, Los Angeles County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter told CNN.

It is not known how long each man lived after the crash as the fire began, Winter said. That information may be included when full autopsy reports are released in several weeks, he said.

The coroner confirmed what many witnesses told investigators: Rodas was the driver in the crash; Walker was the passenger of the high-performance Porsche that clipped a light pole and a tree before erupting in flames on a Southern California street Saturday afternoon.

The deaths were officially ruled an accident by the coroner.

You can see that the car didnt catch fire for an estimated 1 minute after the initial impact. Then a huge explosion that almost looks to be continually 'exploding' several times.....The vid is in fast motion...The vid is from a security camera on the same side of the street.
