Amazon Uses ’60 Minutes’ To Unveil Automated Delivery Drones http://pmcvariety.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/184124179.jpg?w=490&h=276&crop=1 December 1, 2013 | 05:28PM PT Flying robots could deliver Amazon orders in four to five years, CEO Bezos estimates In the future, Amazon (http://variety.com/t/amazon/) customers may no longer need to rely on the U.S. Postal Service, FedEx or UPS to deliver their packages to their doorsteps.

In an eyebrow-raising maneuver that put the future on display while audiences were waiting for “The Amazing Race” and “The Good Wife,” the online-retailing giant seized the chance offered by a Charlie Rose (http://variety.com/t/charlie-rose/)-led segment on “60 Minutes (http://variety.com/t/60-minutes/)” to unveil an effort it is making to use automated drones to deliver the millions of goods its customers order.

Jeff Bezos (http://variety.com/t/jeff-bezos/), Amazon’s founder and CEO, told Rose on the CBS (http://variety.com/t/cbs/) program that the drones could carry up to five pounds of goods in a ten-mile radius from one of the company’s fulfillment centers. He estimated the fascinating gadgets, which would use GPS coordinates to find a specific location, would likely not appear for four to five years, calling an estimate before 2015 overly optimistic. The drones would be “very green,” he told Rose, since they would not burn fuel like delivery trucks.

Whittling down the costs of delivery if of primary interest to the Seattle company, which for years has eked out razor-thin profit margins because it continues to sink a good portion of its incoming cash into facilitating faster distribution of the thousands of products it sells to its customer base.

I think this is awesome. I know it spooks some people but it is the good side of drone usage. The bad side is obviously military/police.

This is the Hegelian Dialectic at work.

People hear the word 'drone' and associate it with 'spying' and other prying activities. The system is combating that by rolling out 'fun' drones and 'helper' drones. Once the public accepts this as normal, it will be much easier for them to unleash the 'bad' side.

Please tell me what 'product' you need so badly that it must be delivered by a Corporation in 30 minutes or less?

Will they deliver guns and ammo? Like a CoD weapons drop? LOL Somehow i think NOT......

As a low flying bush pilot, these things scare the hell out of me. Inevitably, the government is going to give the skies over to the corporations.

Technology is a double edged sword. There are many ways this will empower us the power elite do not foresee.

That's why the government will introduce a minimum income. It will be forced welfare on everyone. This will be the only way we can keep Capitalism working with all the jobless hordes as a consequence of automation.

Bring back horse and buggy in the postal service? To me it does make sense to use automated drones for deliveries... Sure the other end of the spectrum is using drones to kill and spy on people. The technology in itself is not evil, just like weapons aren't...
