Well I am just delighted to share with you that I just got off the phone with Vernon Johnston, the gentleman that reached out to me when I was finishing my Sodium Bicarbonate book. He was the fellow who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer with metastasis to the bones. This was over 15 months ago and I wrote up his story and shared his treatment diary in my Rich Man’s Poor Man’s Cancer Treatment bicarbonate book (http://drsircus.com/books/e-book/sodium-bicarbonate-second-edition). He was going to do a cesium chloride treatment but because his order got lost in the mail ended up doing sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) (http://drsircus.com/medicine/sodium-bicarbonate-baking-soda) orally, managed to get his urinary pH up to 8.5 for five days and then within two weeks was back at his oncologists office for a test, which showed his bones being cleared of his cancer.
“Cancer tried to kill me. After a struggle or two, or three, or four, or more I said, “No!” Or at least I was hoping for a “No.” I turned to Cesium, but ended up with Baking Soda. My goal was to change my pH quickly. I knew little or next to nothing what pH, Alkaline or Acidic meant. Happily I found out,” said Vernon Johnston.
Talking to him on the phone was really nice for he seems just so full of life and is obviously alive and in very fine health and has not seen a doctor in a year. Now that is really good news. Dr. Tullio Simoncini would have said this is impossible for he believes that even his expensive treatment with IVs would not do the job but he was wrong and that is why I call for universal oral use in all cancers coupled with intensive transdermal use as well.

I make it very clear in my Sodium Bicarbonate book that I do not believe in single solutions or cures for cancer being a full protocol practitioner. My overall treatment philosophy for cancer is to trap the cancer in a deadly crossfire and beat the crap out of it with safe concentrated nutritional medicinals and solid health practices including plenty of sun exposure, exercise, touch via massage, and breathing techniques that you can see on Vernon’s site. But, as Vernon’s case demonstrates, the sodium bicarbonate is the lead Panzer Division that has the power to kick ass pretty much all by itself.

Not sorry for the street language here because this is important information for humanity and in my Winning the War on Cancer (http://drsircus.com/books/e-book/winning-the-war-on-cancerl) book I use this analogy quite liberally. Even something as Yin as breathing can be used in quite a Yang way. Though I believe there are a hundred cures for cancer, many of them very good, and though I like to combine the strongest of them together into a comprehensive protocol, sodium bicarbonate is a no brainer that even the poorest person can afford and the richest man should use. Same can be said of iodine and magnesium chloride and it is heartening to hear more and more people using this combination.
The bad news is that people are dropping like flies all over the world from escalating cancer because of increased toxins in the air, water and food (mercury pollution for instance is still increasing and now they want to vaccinate the world with mercury containing swine flu and influenza vaccines) there is more uranium in the air because of the use of depleted uranium weapons by the American Military. Of course the quality of water most people are drinking and the stress levels from the death throes of the vicious corporate capitalist system is not helping anyone’s immune system.
Vernon reminded me that originally Dr. Simoncini did not endorse any use of oral bicarbonate but it seems they have had a change of heart and at least are recommending it for certain cancers. I really do not understand what is going on with Dr. Simoncini and his followers. I tried to sign onto a yahoo group dedicated to his protocol and they rejected my application. My assistant Claudia French RN said after carefully reading their information that she felt they were closed minded and were not interested in the alkaline effect of sodium bicarbonate, which of course is absolutely bizarre since it is one of its main effects. Dr. Simoncini seems stuck on his Candida theory and the anti fungal properties of backing soda and just really does not want to look too deeply into bicarbonates medical profile, which includes rushing more Oxygen to cancer cells through radical pH shifts and increased CO2 levels.
I am not against the use of IVs and recently talked to a doctor in Africa who uses them to great effect against cancer and AIDS. I will not share her name openly at this point but I have known her for quite some time and am deeply impressed with her medical finesse. She says:
“If Simoncini is correct that cancer is fungus the MMS, which becomes chlorine dioxide in the body given intravenously will kill off the fungus in the body. The MMS is quite foul and distresses many peoples’ stomachs so the reason it is given intravenously is that you can get a higher dose in without the same side effects. Also I found my patients had side effects from the bicarbonate IVs using Simoncini’s protocol so I give it orally. So we get the same effect just administering the agents differently. I found this worked best for the patients I was treating. It so easy to give and does not give any discomfort.
My protocol for treating people is to give them magnesium and B6 with sodium chlorite intravenously and iodine and sodium bicarbonate orally. I premix magnesium sulfate or magnesium chloride and pyridoxine in a 200ml bag of saline, as follows: 40 ml magnesium 50% and pyridoxine 100mg/ml 40ml into the saline. I draw up 10ml 0f this mixture and that is given slowly intravenously via a 23 butterfly needle. This is followed by a 20ml syringe filled as follows.1-2 ml 28% sodium chlorite and 5% glucose to fill the 20ml syringe. This mixture is sometimes activated with 2ml of citric acid 10% and the sodium chlorite solution is reduced to 1/2 ml instead of the 1-2ml.
So I am giving 30 ml into a vein. They feel of course the hot rush from the magnesium but they actually enjoy it because it does all the good magnesium things. Depending on the patient I do this either weekly or sometimes up to three times a week. I have these patients take half to a full teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate morning and evening and giving iodine mixed right into the bicarbonate. If it is a cancer patient I give a product with three types of vitamin C (ascorbic acid, calcium ascorbic and magnesium ascorbic which is mixed with L-Lysine but a few hours after the administration of the IV.
I have a doctor friend in Moscow who uses the MMS transdermally driving it in with DMSO and he also reports good results but I have never been very comfortable with the mania around MMS and the way it is marketed and put out with religious fever. I have heard of many bad stories but I have to concede to some good ones as well and my doctor friends seem to have avoided the down side by cutting out the use of it orally in favor of intravenous and transdermal application.
So Vernon is alive and well. Now of course he is not the only cancer survivor and many have made it through various natural means and some few even despite chemo and radiation therapy, which most alternative practitioners believe made cancer more not less dangerous. After all orthodox oncologists use treatments that cause cancer to cure it so we cannot expect life enhancing results. Surgical intervention, toxic chemo and radiation all are known to facilitate or cause cancer.
What is remarkable about Vernon’s case is that his result, and the same goes for Dr. Simoncini’s patients, shows a clear cause and effect relationship between cancer, its elimination and sodium bicarbonate, that simple household item that doubles behind hospital doors as an emergency room medicine. Yes some precautions need to be taken but most people can learn to use it themselves safely like Vernon did. In my book much is explained for professional and patient alike but one does not need to fully understand bicarbonate no physiology to brush ones teeth with bicarbonate (which I highly recommend for everyone) or take it from the minute, or even way before one suspects one has cancer.
The pH level of our internal fluids affects every cell in our body.
Chronic over acidity corrodes body tissue, and if left unchecked
will interrupt all cellular activities and functions. In other words,
over acidity interferes with life itself. It is at the root of cancer.
Everyone should buy some pH strips and become familiar with this invisible side of our lives. It is sad that our schools do not teach us the rudiments of health and even medicine because it is not that difficult to fathom or practice. I intend to commit more time and energy to bring the bicarbonate story to the world for it seems like the message is not getting out enough and many still don’t get how simple it is. When I read the Cancer Tutor site’s (http://cancertutor.com/faq/faq_inexpensive.html) information I felt sad because it so misinforms with such little information an extremely valuable and amazingly inexpensive basic treatment for cancer.

I've read the solution is to use pure maple syrup with no preservatives or substitutes and pure aluminum free baking soda. Lightly cooking it in a pan over a fire. Not too hot, and not too cold. You'll have to find the correct method so as to get the baking soda to fully absorb into the maple syrup. You're building a Trojan Horse. Sweet (cancer loves sugar) laced with baking soda.

I've read really good results from people who had cancer using this method.

It’s not because I don’t enjoy it, although like any long term hobby my blogging does occasionally feel like more of an obligation than a hobby. That’s only part of the time, though. Most of the time I really do enjoy what I do. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t get to me from time to time, however. After all, how much quackery, pseudoscience, and woo can a plastic box of blinking multicolored lights stand on a daily basis for five years. I would submit to you that Orac is made of quite stern stuff indeed. Still, it’s depressing to see just how far a physician will go over to the dark side. Such a physician is Dr. Joe Mercola (http://www.mercola.com/), whose site rivals Mike Adams’ NaturalNews.com (http://www.naturalnews.com/) for the title of biggest repository of medical woo on the Internet. There are differences, of course. For instance, Dr. Mercola comes across as seemingly reasonable as he promotes the worst forms of quackery while Mike Adams comes across as unhinged…as he promotes the worst forms of quackery. And, make no mistake, quackery much of it is. The latest example is yet another instance of Mercola taking advantage of the H1N1 pandemic to promote the rankest pseudoscience to an unsuspecting world in an article entitled Overlooked 150 Year Old Household Cleaner a Remedy for Swine Flu? (http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/12/15/Baking-Soda-Used-to-Treat-Swine-Flu-85-Years-Ago.aspx) It’s hard to find a more clearly fallacious set of arguments. In fact, this time around Mercola makes Dana Ullman’s support of homeopathy seem almost reasonable.
Well, not really, but Mercola sure does try. Basically, he tries to convince his readers that baking soda will cure H1N1. First, he references a woo-filled article (http://sodiumbicarbonate.imva.info/index.php/administration-methods/arm-hammer-soda-company/) that claims:


In today’s modern world of medicine the FDA just will not let companies that sell products make medical claims about them unless they have been tested at great expense and approved as a drug. But this was not always the case and as we can see in the information in this chapter, which is from a 1924 booklet,[1] published by the Arm & Hammer Soda Company. On page 12 the company starts off saying, “The proven value of Arm & Hammer Bicarbonate of Soda as a therapeutic agent is further evinced by the following evidence of a prominent physician named Dr. Volney S. Cheney, in a letter to the Church & Dwight Company:

“In 1918 and 1919 while fighting the ‘Flu’ with the U. S. Public Health Service it was brought to my attention that rarely any one who had been thoroughly alkalinized with bicarbonate of soda contracted the disease, and those who did contract it, if alkalinized early, would invariably have mild attacks. I have since that time treated all cases of ‘Cold,’ Influenza and LaGripe by first giving generous doses of Bicarbonate of Soda, and in many, many instances within 36 hours the symptoms would have entirely abated. Further, within my own household, before Woman’s Clubs and Parent-Teachers’ Associations, I have advocated the use of Bicarbonate of Soda as a preventive for “Colds,” with the result that now many reports are coming in stating that those who took “Soda” were not affected, while nearly every one around them had the “Flu.”
Amazing, isn’t it? Doesn’t it remind you of the claims of homeopaths (http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2009/04/more_quackery_at_huffpo.php) that homeopathy routinely produced better results treating the flu during the 1918 influenza pandemic than “conventional” medicine? This was a claim derived from a story that homeopaths relate of W.A. Dewey, MD, who allegedly reported that among patients treated by homeopaths there was a mortality rate of just over 1%, which is less than half the reported case fatality rate (http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/eid/vol12no01/05-0979.htm) observed during the pandemic. Of course, in the story it’s not mentioned that the real case fatality rate was around 2.5% for the pandemic; homepaths claim it was their woo producing a 1% death rate versus a 30% death rate among those treated by conventional doctors.
Much like Dr. Dewey, if you Google Dr. Volney S. Cheney virtually all you will find is various quack-friendly websites citing this same story. Moreover, it’s hard not to point out that this physician’s claims appeared in promotional literature for Arm & Hammer Baking Soda. Arm & Hammer was trying to sell a product, and it could produce no studies that suported its claims for its baking soda. It’s just a friggin’ pamphlet. Woo-meisters fallaciously claim that modern medicine isn’t supported by evidence, but here they cite a nearly 90 year old pamphlet published before there were laws in place to require that advertisements claiming a health benefit due to a product have evidence to back them up.
Dr. Mercola then goes on to comment on his own. Hilariously, he warns that “many believe” that Arm & Hammer Baking Soda is “contaminated” with aluminum (and so what if it is?) and asks for more information before promoting baking soda as in essence a cure-all. In this, he is no different from “alkalinization master” Robert O. Young (http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2009/01/sepsis_is_not_caused_by_infection.php). Dr. Young even claims that “alkalinzation” with sodium bicarbonate will cure cancer. However, Mercola didn’t choose to cite Young. Why, I don’t know. He would seem to be the perfect go-to guy for this sort of thing. On the other hand, Mercola seems to prefer his own variety of acid-base quacks, guys like Dr. Tullio Simoncini (http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2008/08/a_fungus_among_us_in_oncology.php) and another one I hadn’t heard of, Mark Sircus, Ac, OMD (http://sodiumbicarbonate.imva.info/), who buys into the same woo (http://sodiumbicarbonate.imva.info/index.php/cancer-treatment). He also clearly doesn’t understand basic physiology:

Cancer is, fundamentally, a relatively simple oxygen
deficiency disease and the use of bicarbonate
increases oxygen carrying and reaching capacity.
Um, no. Not really. It’s true that increasing the pH of the blood causes hemoglobin to “hold onto” oxygen more tightly (http://www.bio.davidson.edu/Courses/anphys/1999/Dickens/Oxygendissociation.htm), but the problem with that is that oxygen doesn’t do the cells much good unless it can be delivered to the cells, which doesn’t happen as well in regions of high pH. There’s a perfectly good physiological reason for this. Tissues lacking oxygen turn to anaerobic metabolism, and when they do they generate lactic acid, which lowers the pH. Hemoglobin “lets go” of oxygen more easily when the pH is low (acidic).
Mercola is then stupid enough to reference this video by Dr. Simoncini (http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/08/05/fungus-causing-cancer-a-novel-approach-to-the-most-common-form-of-death.aspx?source=nl), which I deconstructed before (http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2008/08/a_fungus_among_us_in_oncology.php) as being so hopelessly ignorant of the science behind cancer. Remember, Simoncini is the guy who thinks that cancer is a fungus because, according to him, cancer is white and fungi are white. Apparently he’s never heard of melanoma or other pigmented cancers or the many varieties of quite colorful fungus. Ignorance this deep is truly an art. A black art, but an art. Sadly, Sircus tries to outdo even Simoncini (http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/12/15/Baking-Soda-Used-to-Treat-Swine-Flu-85-Years-Ago.aspx):

In his book Winning the War on Cancer, Dr. Sircus writes:

“Sodium bicarbonate is the time honored method to ‘speed up’ the return of the body’s bicarbonate levels to normal. Bicarbonate is inorganic, very alkaline and like other mineral type substances, supports an extensive list of biological functions.
Sodium bicarbonate happens to be one of our most useful medicines because bicarbonate physiology is fundamental to life and health.”
Many chemotherapy treatments actually include sodium bicarbonate to help protect the patient’s kidneys, heart and nervous system. It’s been said that administering chemotherapy without bicarbonate could possibly kill you on the spot.
The stupid, it burns! Much like dropping some concentrated sodium hydroxide to “alkalinize” your skin would burn, actually. The reason that sodium bicarbonate is provided as part of a chemotherapy regimen is not to treat the tumor, but to protect the kidneys. Some chemotherapy regimens cause massive tumor cell lysis, and alkalinization of the blood with large doses of sodium bicarbonate helps prevent uric acid from tumor cell lysis from precipitating in the kidney and causing renal failure if urine pH can be kept above 7.0. Indeed, the syndrome has a name: Tumor lysis syndrome (http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/282171-treatment). Moreover, Tumor lysis syndrome doesn’t occur unless the chemotherapy has been very successful in killing tumor cells. Sircus is also apparently unaware that there has been some rethinking of whether alkalinization of the urine is as beneficial as once thought; it’s not as routinely done as it used to be. Maybe sodium bicarbonate isn’t so great after all.
Of course, that doesn’t keep Sircus from leaping to this claim:

Could it be that while mixing chemo poisons with baking soda, any improvements seen are the result of the baking soda, and not the toxic poisons? Dr. Sircus believes that may be the case.

“There are no studies separating the effects of bicarbonate from the toxic chemotherapy agents, nor will there ever be,” he says.
There’s a reason for that: It isn’t the bicarbonate that’s causing massive tumor cell lysis. It’s also unethical to give a patient bicarbonate alone without chemotherapy, which is the only way to “separate the effects” of bicarbonate from those of chemotherapy. The reason it’s unethical is because it’s unethical to deny effective treatment to a patient with cancer. In any case, Sircus is just as ignorant as Simoncini; he’s confusing an adjunct use of chemotherapy in a supportive role to try to prevent the complications of killing tumors with chemotherapy with using it therapeutically to treat cancer. I suppose I should be happy that he hasn’t claimed that cancer is a fungus. Little things like that save my sanity.
Dr. Mercola tries to represent himself as a “reasonable” booster of “alternative medicine” in contrast to all those quacks out there. However, given how he clearly buys into (or cynically sells) acid-base woo to his readers, I’m hearing a quacking sound, and it’s emanating from Mercola. He’s promoting quackery for H1N1 in this instance, and he’s promoting cancer quackery from Sircus and Simoncini.
You know, I’m starting to like Mike Adams better. At least he doesn’t pretend to be something he’s not.
