Because my water pipes are frozen I got up this morning and went to my smaller water tank to get some water for my coffee and the snow on the ground was frozen....crunch, crunch, crunch....the top of the, or cover, of the water tank was frozen in place so no coffee for a while.
My dog always follows me when I go out of my inner fence but this morning he got out of his heated huch took two steps and made an about face back to his warm blanket.....like myself my dog thinks that he is retired.

If you have any access to black locust in your area it burns hot and slow ......green!
Almost like burning hedge if you've ever had any hedge.
This stuff splits with a mull like splitting diamonds (less work than using a log splitter)....no log splitter is really needed. A two foot diameter log can be split with ease with a 5lb mull. The bark comes off real easy...usually don't have any bark on it once it hits the ground.....the bark literally falls off when it hits the ground.
Doesn't need any seasoning to it. I've burned it green for the last 4-5 years and haven't had any more build up of creosote from burning seasoned oak or hickory. Burns hotter than oak and longer.
It burns the cleanest (has more blue flame to it than oak ) with the least amount of ash than any other wood I've burned.
Only downside to burning black locust is it stinks...................strong smoldering leaf smell to it......not a good camp fire wood if you are looking for the camp fire smell.

When your door locks freeze, you'll want to heat your key and stick it in the lock a few times.
When climbing icy hills, plan your attack and wait for the road in front of you to be clear of cars.
Good idea to keep extra clothes (hoodie sweatshirt, gloves) in the car in case you ever have a problem.

Also, if it's really cold where you are at, watch for ice around intersections. The cars melt the snow waiting for the light, and it can freeze pretty quick. If you don't have to drive I'd stay put and enjoy a lazy snow day. :) The snow is fun, I miss those days.

Sounds fun, I've got my excitement hunkering down today. Small arctic blow coming through, wnw at 25 knot gusts. Had frost the other morning, but now just wind. Cold wind, that kind of wind that cuts through everything right to the bone. Boat's creaking and rocking, coming into her docklines nicely though.

The push model I posted is IMO far superior to the one EE posted, no offense EE. It can be broken down into two pieces or you can just use it w/o the handle. It works better because the side to side motion to clear the snow is awkward and harder, with the broom I posted the motion is back and forth (easier) and is more efficient with the added bristles and length.
As far as the windshield snow/ice scraper goes, look for a short handheld model, the acrylic ones work the best in my experience. Using one that's on the end of a longer brush like EE's is a PITA, sorry again EE.
Get a couple cans of de-icer! A must have.
If you find yourself having to drive in ice...try and stay to the right on the burm if possible, great for uphills if you know there's gravel there. The curb if there is one can also help not going out of control as you can slowly ride it downhill if you have to.

No, it's exciting man. Same thing happened to me when I moved from CA to CO years ago, first snow. I didn't have the prepping mindset at the time, like you do however. Learned a few things the hard way. Drove a Jeep at the time, had the top off when the first storm came. Jeep filled up with snow. That was a cold drive to work that day. Folks on the road were looking at me funny, must thought I was nuts.
Shami, you do have the anti freeze windshield fluid in your car now, right?

My Dos centavos!
Never, Never, use hot water to get ice and stuff off your windshield, and windows. You are just asking to break them by the thermo shock, you may get away with doing it, but good chance you won't.
Going up hill, hold a steady throttle, build your speed before the hill. Giving gas on the hill can make you break traction.

Start the car first, and run the heat in it for about 20 minutes.
That way when you're done de-icing one half of the windshield you can sit in the heated car before you de-ice the other half.

I drove in the snow my first time today. Definitely scary. I have to drive super slow since I found my brakes lock up and I slid pretty far one time. On my way back home I just drove slow as Hell and had no issues. I got almost the same thing as in the picture. I used a regular broom though to clean off the snow and that did the trick.
The last time I was in the snow was when I was 11 years old.

When I slid I almost hit a car stopped at a left turn. I changed lanes fast enough though. Thankfully the light was green too.

Actually it scared the shit out of me. I probably should have said that in my previous post but I'm embarrassed and feel stupid. I just really don't know and this is all new to me.
