The FBI has developed advanced surveillance techniques that give it the power to covertly activate Web cams to spy on unsuspecting computer owners.

Tech savvy G-men can remotely turn on cameras that transmit real-time images to investigators — without triggering the light that shows the camera is in use, according to The Washington Post.

The FBI can also burrow into a suspect’s computer and download files, photographs and stored e-mails.

The new snooping capabilities came to light during an investigation of a mysterious man named “Mo’’ – who threatened to blow up a building filled with innocent people unless authorities free Colorado movie-theater shooting suspect James Holmes.

you're NOT paranoid to have your laptop's cam taped over. I put a little black piece of paper over it, scotch-taped into place. The black side fits in with the surrounding black rim of the screen, so very inconspicuous. Problem with tape (opaque: masking, electrical..) straight on the cam lens is, once in a blue moon you decide to video chat with someone, you take off the tape, and the lens is all gooey with tape glue, obscuring the picture! U need a cloth dipped in warm soapy water to clean the lens!

I don't have a smartphone, and the old broken dumb phone I have tends to turn itself off every time I put it in my pocket. If the feds wanna buy me a new phone with all the bells and whistles and pay for the required data plan every month, well... :-*

I went into my computer and disassembled the built in Micro phone and set it up to where you have to use a plug in Mic. Also put electrical tape on my cameras.

Back in the day when I had a cell phone, I covered the camera with business card. Anymore, I dont even like having company over and them carrrying cell phones in my home. I need a sign on my door that says cell free area or get one of those things that block cellphone waves!
