Not many volunteer departments around here have 50 firefighters. Ours is headed for a shutdown for exactly the opposite reason. We can't get enough volunteers to show up. With the ongoing consolidation of farms, there are fewer farmers around. And the ones who are left all think they are too busy. And of course the city people who move to a small town don't volunteer, they think everything should be done for them.

In this area the volunteer FD's outnumber the permanent ones by a huge margin. MY nearest large city/town 80,000 pop. There are less than 50 perm employees on the force the rest are volunteer fill ins when needed.
