Ford Power Stroke vs. Dodge Cummins vs. Chevy Duramax Diesel Trucks - GM has the best Transmission ?

My neighbor has a Chevy 4x4 with some kind of super non slip locking or non-locking differential.

So admittedly I'm not sure on all the details but the bottom line is, the transmission works good.

My Ford 2 wheel drive truck is getting O L D (bought it new in 1998). It has been a great workhorse.

Overall, I am hearing the most compliments about the Cummins. I ask every Cummins owner I meet how they like their truck. I haven't talked to a single Cummins owner who didn't like their truck.

A few weeks ago I met a guy with a Duramax who came to see a Mercedes diesel I have for sale. He was really into Biodiesel, and quite knowledgeable about it.

If I had to buy a new truck today I would look at the Dodge Cummins and the Duramax with whatever transmission my neighbor has. And I would probably check out the Power Stroke.

On Biodiesel forums, there is a near-consensus that the Dodge Cummins is most compatible with Biodiesel, although there's not a lot of Chevy owners there. Biodiesel can mess up the timing on some electronic ignitions, but not on the trucks.

So - why makes the best Diesel truck ?

It's possible I would consider a compact pick-up. Toyota sells a compact pick-up with a diesel engine overseas. I met one guy who managed to install the Toyota diesel on his American Toyota pick-up.

The motivation for getting the compact would be mileage.

Toyota sells the Hilux down here which is the smaller pickup. 4.0Litre diesel. Most popular work horse in australia. They are everywhere. Hold their value well. Tough and reliable but a bit thirsty compare to others. You can take these off the show room floor and drive pretty much anywhere. The simpson desert for instance.

The Duramax is a good engine. We get the 2.8L here now... bloody EU regulations. The cummins is also a good engine but old tech now, which is probably why the bio fuel people like them. Isuzu would be the other one. The 3.0L from their 3+ tonne trucks is the engine. They sell that engine in the small Dmax ute/pickup. Excellent ute. My choice. Has a lot of the truck components in it such as the drive shaft. Bash plates underneath for protection in the scrub. not bad for ex-factory. As tough as the hilux for sure and a bit more economical.

Most of the other players are selling 2.5L diesels which I think will be the largest size diesel you can get in a ute from next year. Waste of time IMo.

These guys did a demo of the new torque converter type traction system in the Dmax. Wondering if this is what is in the Chevy?

Opinions will fly. I think midnight rambler mentioned a cummins set up he was having built to go in a older f250/350 maybe, sounded interesting. I would go old school. Your "old" truck is years newer than my newest truck. If i was building one i would get away from any kind of electronic injection and go with mechanical for ease of repair/simplictity. You could build a badass near bullet proof rig for way less than the price of something new. Agnut also seems to have some diesel experience. I wish you could find those toyota diesels in the US without the high price tag. Be careful with the biodiesel, it has been known to grow a lot of bacteria and clogs filters.
