View Full Version : Hunger Games 2: Catching Fire

There was a previous GSUS thread on the first Hunger Games movie (http://gold-silver.us/forum/showthread.php?59915-Hunger-Games-Movie-Review&highlight=hunger+games).
I saw the sequel tonight, and I went back and read that thread. I've created this new thread because I now think the the original criticism could not have been more wrong.
LuckyStrike was spot on in Post #20 that he likened this to a modern day Brave New World, or Animal Farm, or 1984. It's everything we talk about here. I was on to this in my first review (Post #29 from the original thread), but now I'm even more impressed. The entire trilogy is about TPTB pushing oppression to the point of revolution. It's every freakin' thing thing we talk about here about the people "waking up". If you don't see that in this movie (or novel), then I accuse you of being half asleep yourself. If you are criticizing this movie (or novel) without having seen it (or read it), then you should either do your homework or shut up.
Now, some of you have said that this whole thing is about TPTB simply creating more wealth for themselves from the profits of this movie. There is some truth to that, since that may well have been the motivation of the producers (though not likely the original novelist). However, if that's the case, they are flaunting in our faces that they are profiting from a movie that exposes exactly how they are fleecing the people, and they are relying on most people not understanding the message. So I say for those of you who think this movie is just more Hollywood garbage, you're missing what's going on here. The catch phrase from the movie is "Remember who the real enemy is". This is exactly what we've been trying to enlighten others about. This will now be my response to any one of my friends who tries to take a side in partisan politics.
A tremendous essay about this on ZeroHedge if you have the patience and attention span to read 15 pages:

The slaves supply the master and the master supplies the servants and what is left over is supplied to the slaves.
The bottom supplies all the power to the top wholesale and the top marks it up and sells it to the bottom retail.
The difference between the wholesale price and the retail cost is the yield the top live off of.
The absolute capitalist system is the enemy of all in it.

P.S. The architects of the revolution in Hunger Games are recognized by the gold emblems that they wear. Coincidence?

Yes. This is exactly what the Hunger Games trilogy is trying to explain to the masses.

When they enter the arena, there is a supply of items that match the skills that have been demonstrated during the exhibition. For instance, this is how Katniss gets her bow and arrows. Beetee had demonstrated skill with all things electrical.

It would suffice to say that only those provided the necessary tools are able to start a revolution.

Hunger Games is based on Battle Royale (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266308/).
:) which is about the importance of high school personal FRIENDSHIP. The cover asks "Could you kill your best friend?"

I have not seen or read Battle Royale. Reviews have noted similarities between the two books (which is different than "being based on" it). But you point out that Battle Royale is about killing your peers. That's what most people think Hunger Games is about. But it turns out to be much deeper than that.

Hey can I play ?
Mr. Greek is here. ;D
Think Greek. :)*#*
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minotaur
I saw the first Hunger Games to see what all the buzz was about.
For what ever it is worth, some aspects are similar, below are 2 cases and 1 contrast.
There is actually some historical speculation,
that legend was based on some fact, maidens
were offered up to the " minotaur " , for sacrifice, and this was
done as some sort of agreement, offering, appeasement,
kind of like " dane gold " , FOR PEACE, NO WAR, with a powerful
enemy. So the story of the Minotaur may not just be
Mythology. When Theseus slays the Minotaur this may not be an
individual act, but may represent a war, success and freedom.
Theseus may be one of the leaders/generals of that era.
It is also speculated that " baal/molech " may be the demon
that the young were sacrificed to. In the past in that region,
there were no major populations, but city states, it is very
possible that an enemy city state occupied
shores whose land population were serfs, with human tribute,
the Islands in this region would be easy to dominate in this manner.
Thera blew up in real life, destroyed the region, much of the Mythology
comes from the same time period, but the Minotaur Myth
may be earlier. The Greeks/Romans did not sacrifice people and later
they did record others doing this, like the baal/molech worshippers.
The maidens have a fighting chance, they just have to kill the minotaur.
And if they do not show up, something very bad happens to their society.
Theseus stops this madness.
=============
Then we got that whole crazy gladiator thing.
Fight for your freedom, kill kill kill, feed your enemies and Christians to the lions.
Your society won't be saved though, you are to be killed just for sport.
============
Then you got that whole Greek Olympics thing, quite a bit different,
your only reward was a crown of oak, crowned by victory, knowing you excelled
pushingyour body to the limits, all in honor of Zeus that pagan " bad " god . LOL !
Apollo lights the torch, done to this day. All war ceased with safe travel for all.

Because of this review I just watched the 2012 Hunger Games, it was good. I don't think it would have made as much sense to me without reading this first. I read the other thread and decided to not watch it at that time.

Haven't seen the new movie yet, but thoroughly enjoyed this short post about it on ZH:
Fact Or Fiction: The Hunger Game
One is a dystopian society of haves and have-nots (favored or disfavored) controlled from The Capitol by a totalitarian 'big' government and entertained by reality TV shows... the other is a fictional movie entitled "The Hunger Games"...

I read the books, in book 3 there's a part where they discuss the good old days of democracy, of course referring to today's US government.

It is always good to read the book first if possable, and if not at least after seeing the movie. It does make the overall experience better for understanding.

I agree. There is too much internal dialogue going on in Katniss' head that doesn't translate well to the screen.

Agree!
Hell a very good example is the movie made from clarks book 2001 a space odyssey. If you see the movie is one thing, but If you read the book and then see it, WoW.. You understand the details/background.
There is dialog/thoughts that the book has that the movie can not express. That goes with any movie based on any good book/read.

Crap, I have read all of the books, now because of this thread. Going to watch it using my prime membership with amazon. It is free to prime members. Might as well justify the price of membership besides the free shipping. I buy heavily from them, so the price of membership is worth it even considering the increase.

Haft to admit so far the movie is following the book as best as they can. And agree if they follow the books, the third movie will tie it all together.
To see or not? If you got your rocks off watching the matrix. This one is more real, hell I shed a tear or so because I could relate.
