I might have the opportunity to purchase a Yugo 24/47 from a friend, and am seeking advice. The gun appears to be in very nice shape. The stock finished nicely, all the numbers match, the action and all the metal seems great.
What are your thoughts on this gun? Is the 8 mil ammo an issue?
Basically, I'd like/need an inexpensive truck gun, to keep in my RV for camping and other insurances. My main objectives is good quality, cheap and available ammo. A gun built like a brick, that can take the abuse of an outdoor existence, and something that is inexpensive if stolen/taken from me.
Another option I like is the Chinese type 53 mosin variant.

I have a K98 and a Rus MN. The K98 is smoother, more reliable and better engineered. The MN is more accurate.

When I say the Mauser is more reliable, It's because it feeds and extracts everything without fail. The MN is a touch more like a crazy girlfriend. More FTF and extration problems

These mauser's seem to get good reviews. My friend offered it to me for $200, with a bandolier with 70 rounds. Seems like a good deal as these are going for around $300 for a nice one online.

I've been in the market for a Swed Mauser, but when I found these came in lefty I had to pounce, and it has the same Mauser bolt. Love or hate the scout concept, it is a great truck gun. Especially around here where anything tactical looking is frowned upon. I haven't had it out to any distance but the GF was hitting a five inch stainless saucer at 200 yards her first time firing a rifle.

Milehi, does that one have a detachable magazine or do you load with clips. Looks like the mag holds 10 rounds?
Awesome your GF is a great shot with it. That's no bread roller or frying pan to whack you with. Don't piss her off. :)

The mag in the second pic is a DBM Ruger branded AI 10rnd mag which comes with the rifle. It's way too long and wobbly in the mag well. It's singlestack too.The poly mag is a Ruger 10 rnd. It's lighter, shorter, and feeds better. I also have a couple 10 rnd Alpha Ind mags. They're metal, the shortest, feed the best and have no slop. The Alpha mags can also be fed from the top.

Don't get me started on the 6.5x55 cartridge in a mauser.
I won't stop.

The cartridge's appeal to handloaders over the years is directly related to how well the cartridge responds to modern loading and because of the large number of high sectional density, high ballistic coefficient bullets that are available for hunting and for competitive shooting. Even when muzzle velocity seems modest, down range the 0.264" bullet retains velocity, which means greater stability and high levels of kinetic energy.
I like the round because it also makes an excellent north eastern hunting cartridge; good reach, good power, light recoil and inexpensive to reload. Its capacity makes it efficient, so good performance can be delivered from a short barrel. The 6.5x55mm is proof that good ideas last. In over 118 years, no collection of people or companies have been able to come up with a better 6.5 hunting round, without producing a limited application cartridge.

Seems the Yugo isn't very popular with the ladies. If I buy the Yugo mauser, perhaps I should tell the gals I meet it's a german mauser.... :D

The Mauser action is a classic and dam near every rifle action since it came out has been based on it.
(It was a game changer bar none!)
The question is , what skill was used to make it, what materials were used and the care of the fit, and more important
what kind of care was used in making the barrel and rifling. Good barrel/action/rifling/stock bedding = good gun..
The caliber is a known and proven round that can bring down anything that walks this earth.

Never let a Polish woman fire your 8mm mauser,
excess armpit hair has been known to pinch with the recoil.

Yes western firearms using the Mauser action are better. Skill/materials and such.

I'm through taking advice on women or guns from AR-15 owners, and single guys.
Mauser action can take a bit of getting used to, yes it floats, but can hang = hairy.

This is where the path splits.
The first and trigger finger should not be applied for any duty requiring less coordination, you feigning over to the middle is only employed as some crutch measure of sane balance, when coordinated chaos is required at the extremes, pinky is best.

If I could find her the day after a party, her frock (if still attached to her) might've looked liked it was hit by many other mausers.

She would require many more whacks than it was years ago, to get wet.
I remember her telling me once, that a man slapping a woman was one of the highest forms of expressive passion. :)**
Anyway an old mauser in good condition it something you do fall for.

I took the .308 Ruger Scout to the range first thing this morning. After 400 rounds of various brands of ammo in the past two weeks, here's a mini report, (from a novice).
The stock- There is an adjustable length of pull via the use of spacers. I have all of them removed for winter. Butt pad is too sticky and drags on clothing. Comb could be a half inch higher, for me, especially using the irons. Grip texture is nice, bare handed or gloved. I want a third sling mount.
Bolt- I heard some are gritty. Mine is not. Maybe because I have a lefty? Sometimes the claw doesn't extract (1 in 40 rnds).
Trigger- mine has no creep and I wont be swapping anytime soon.
Barrel- I can slide a FRN up to the receiver. Some say they can't in online reviews I've read. The Mini 14 FH is gay. I swapped for a Black River Tac compensator to spare my neighbors at the range.
I don't care for the poly trigger guard/magwell at this price point*, and the mag release is too short for gloves. It was 34* this morning, LOL.
Rear sight- The Mini 14 sight pretty much fell apart and I'm waiting on a NECG rear sight. The Leopold scope and QR rings are bombproof.
The AI mag that comes with the rifle has too much slop, hangs too low and doesn't feed from the top. The poly Ruger mags are better; Alpha mags are shorter, feed from the top and fit snug.
*I was also charged $50 extra for the lefty, even though the MRSP is the same as the RH. Quite an insult coming from a mom and pop that my brother and I frequent and have 12 firearm purchases between us there last year. I buy from other outlets but do my best to not buy from big box or online to support local businesses.
