It was part of the reason I left California and moved to where I moved. I live in high desert now, so we don't get much moisture/water/snow. I filter all the water from the tap to the shower head. as far as your food shortage scenario goes...for those in the know, tuna and salmon is pretty much already all unobtainable. i have about 100 cans of canned salmon from 2008 or so, says it expires in 2015. i pretty much look at it as gold.

We boarded another bus to the tunnel. At the end of the shift we were transported to the change house and changed out of the radsafe clothing. We were checked by geiger counter as we boarded the "clean" bus.

While I was in high school in 1957 or '58 we were on the football field for PE class. The local radiation monitors came up to the field and said the winds had shifted and we were being exposed to radioactive fall out. We were immediately bussed back to the school and not allowed outside until the cloud had passed.

Some of my rancher friends families lived downwind. They suffered live stock loses, hair loss from radiation burns and the death of a 5 year old boy to leukemia. We could see the fire ball and mushroom clouds from the atmospheric tests on the ranch where I grew up.

Know the blast you are referring to.. that was the one that killed all of the sheep north of the blast as the wind blew.
