It's not politically correct to be just winter anymore. Winter is now considered a 'climate disaster' and an anomaly. Oh, and it makes better junk news, to keep you from thinking about important news.

Chinese icebreaker stuck after Antarctic rescue?
The Chinese icebreaker Xue Long, which helped rescue 52 passengers from the stranded Russian ship Akademik Shokalskiy, is feared to be stuck in the Antarctic sea ice. An Australian icebreaker is now on standby for a potential second rescue mission.
The Xue Long, or Snow Dragon, had helped ferry stranded passengers from the Akademik Shokalskiy to an Australian icebreaker the Aurora Australis, but is now concerned about its own ability to move through the heavy sea ice, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said.
“The Xue Long has advised RCC (Rescue Coordination Center) Australia that it will attempt to manoeuvre through the ice when tidal conditions are most suitable during the early hours of 4 January 2014. There is no immediate danger to personnel on board the Hue Long,” AMSA said on Friday.
As a precautionary measure the Aurora Australis has been put on standby and will stay in open water for the time being. The Australian ship had planned to sail towards Casey, the Australian Antarctic base, to complete a resupply before taking the rescued passengers back to Australia.
A helicopter from the now stranded Snow Dragon had flown the 52 scientists and tourists from the Russian ship to the Australian ship late on Thursday.
The team on Akademik Shakalskiy had been attempting to retrace the steps of Douglas Mawson who led the Australian Antarctic expedition between 1911 and 1913 and had also planned to examine the effects of climate change on the Antarctic environment.
The ship became stuck in the ice on Christmas Eve, 100 nautical miles from the French Antarctic station Dumont d’Urville. The rescue, which Greg Mortimer, one of three expedition leaders on Akademik Shokalskiy, called a “roller coaster” operation had been repeatedly delayed due to bad weather and when it eventually got underway took 5 hours to complete.
Mortimer said he was “immensely relieved for the people under my care” but that he was “very sad” to leave the Russian crew behind.
AMSA confirmed that 22 crew members would remain on the Akademik Shokalskiy and that there were enough supplies for several weeks.

Even colder than Mars weather forecast for Monday.
Cold weather forecast prompts Rochester to cancel school on Monday
Gov. Mark Dayton ordered today that all public schools in Minnesota be closed on Monday in anticipation of dangerous windchills forecasted for next week.
Rochester already had taken the step on Thursday. The decision was unusual in that schools typically wait until the early morning hours of a school day to make such decisions — at the earliest the day before. But a district official said the dangerously cold weather that forecasters are predicting for Monday made the decision a necessary one. So did Dayton.
"The safety of Minnesota's schoolchildren must be our first priority," Dayton said. "I have made this decision to protect all our children from the dangerously cold temperatures now forecasted for next Monday. I encourage Minnesotans of all ages to exercise caution in these extreme weather conditions."
The decision to close schools across the state was announced today in order to give school administrators, teachers and parents sufficient time to plan for these closures, the governor said. The Minnesota Department of Education will be coordinating with school districts throughout the day to notify the public about Monday's school closings.
Dayton's decision is not unprecedented. On Jan. 18, 1994, when windchill temperatures plunged to 48 degrees below zero in the Twin Cities, Gov. Arne Carlson ordered all Minnesota public schools closed. The governor canceled schools again because of extreme weather on Feb. 2, 1996, when air temperatures hovered at 30 degrees below zero with a windchill of 48 degrees below zero. School was canceled statewide a third time a year later, on Jan. 16, 1997, when windchill temps were 32 degrees below zero in the Twin Cities.
In Rochester, Heather Nessler, the district's spokeswoman, said officials consulted multiple weather forecasters before making the decision, and the consensus was that, even if temps rose slightly higher than forecast, it would still be in a "very unsafe zone in terms of frostbite." Experts say exposed skin can become frostbit within 10 minutes in windchill temperatures of 40 degrees below zero.
"The more advance notice our families get, the better, especially when we have to translate languages" for some families, Nessler said. "We don't want kids standing at bus stops because they didn't get the communication."

Failing perhaps but BP managed to destroy it completely.
Can you please explain how this has affected the Gulf Stream? As far as I know the most pronounced climate effect the Gulf Stream has on the British isles, North East Atlantic, and Scandinavia, making these places habitable, and certainly last winter was cold and long here, but not extremely, the summer was a bit warmer and drier than usual, autumn was significantly warmer, and so far we haven't really had any winter in a typical sense, which has happened before but it is unusual. Anyway, yes there has been some extreme weather events since BP, but they have been in both directions, and not to the point that they are unprecedented. IMO nothing so far points to a destruction of the Gulf Stream, from the BP catastrophe onwards. I did read some articles a couple of years ago suggesting that this could happen, so I have payed particular attention to this, but as already stated I haven't seen anything that would really suggest this to be the case. Can you please fill in the blanks for me? Are you suggesting that the Gulf Stream has somewhat started oscillating, and is becoming destabilized, and due to these oscillations we haven't seen anything life changing yet, apart from some extreme weather events, but soon will become destabilized to the point of destruction of the current?

Those or very similar papers were probably what I read a couple of years ago. They really don't contain any evidence that the Gulf Stream stopped a couple of years ago. The fact that climate in Scandinavia didn't change to any significant degree, would be evidence to the contrary. Don't you think?

North Pole is in the cross hairs... North America is down and Asia is up. Mother England is straight to the right. Scandinavia at two o'clock, Greenland at 4. The pinkish white represent sea ice. If anything the Gulf Stream has a cooling influence on North American climate, as heat is transported away from the Gulf of Mexico to the British Isles, Iceland and North East Atlantic/Arctic... The Gulf Stream if anything is stronger than usual. Since there is less ice in the normal distribution pattern of the current!

15 children die in Bangladesh cold snap
Dhaka (AsiaNews) - With the arrival of the first cold snap, at least 15 children have died in the northern districts of Bangladesh. The hospital director of Rongpur , Rezaul Karim , confirms the emergency: " Over the past five days we have registered more than 100 hospitalizations, all children with pneumonia." The victims are under two years of age.
Another 50 children were admitted to the Kurigram Sadar Hospital. One of the management Nazrul Islam , fears that the number could increase in the coming days : " It's too cold ." Yesterday a temperature of -11 degrees Celsius was registered in the district, while today it has risen to -9 . Unfortunately, forecasts are for a further worsening in the next week .
The cold wave , says Islam , brings with it pneumonia , asthma and other respiratory complications : "Only yesterday we admitted 141 people because of complications from the cold. And a further 800 are being cared for in the day hospital". Dr. Lokman Hakim is working to reduce the ranks of those who are waiting for admission: "We have trained 85 staff physicians to give first, in order to optimize the time ."
The Church is involved in helping to cope with the emergency. Danis Baskey , regional director of Caritas , said: " We are distributing more than 2 thousand blankets and warm clothing for the children to those who need it ." Even the Society of St. Vincent de 'Paul is on the ground : their volunteers are collecting clothes among parishioners to be distributed to the local poor.

No End to Coldest China Winter in 28 Years, Forecaster Says
Jan 6, 2013 10:00 AM GMT-0600
Southern China (http://topics.bloomberg.com/china/) will be hit by a new cold front this week, extending the country’s chilliest winter in 28 years, the country’s weather agency said.
Temperatures in Southern provinces including Guangdong will dip to as low as minus 5 degrees Celsius (23 degrees Fahrenheit) on Jan. 11 and 12, the China Meteorological Administration (http://www.cma.gov.cn) said in a statement yesterday. Provinces including Guizhou and Hunan may experience snowstorms, it said.
The cold weather will prove challenging as the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday approaches, with icy rain and snow disrupting transportation, power supplies and electricity networks, the agency said.
Snow, ice and fog have caused havoc on the nation’s roads and at train stations and airports, according to reports from the Xinhua News Agency and China Daily (http://topics.bloomberg.com/china-daily/).
Two people died and 770,000 people have been affected by record-low temperatures and snow in Inner Mongolia (http://topics.bloomberg.com/inner-mongolia/) in northern China, Xinhua said yesterday, citing the local government. More than 260,000 people are in need of emergency aid and about 180,000 head of livestock have died, according to the report.
More than 10,000 people were stranded at Chengdu airport in southwest Sichuan province yesterday after heavy fog caused authorities to close the airport and ground more than 100 flights, Xinhua said in a separate report.
Fog also reduced visibility to as little as 300 meters (328 yards) at the Kunming Changshui International Airport in southwest Yunnan province, leading to “massive flight delays” since Jan. 3, according to the China Daily newspaper.
Heavy Losses
Four people died and 64 others were injured in three separate road accidents in eastern China yesterday, Xinhua said, citing information from local authorities. Slippery road conditions from persistent rain and snow over the past few days may have caused the accidents, traffic police were cited as saying.
Freezing weather created a layer of thick sea ice on Laizhou Bay in eastern Shandong province, leaving about 1,000 vessels stranded, according to a separate Xinhua report. Aquatic producers in the region may face heavy losses as they can’t penetrate the ice to provide ventilation for sea cucumbers and other fish in their farms, the agency said.

Swedish expansionism in the late 1600's could be in part due to Maunder, or Dalton.
At least one part of it. I think it was 1658, the ice between Sweden and Denmark got strong enough to March the Swedish army under king Carl X across to Copenhagen and crush the Danish army. Normally there is no or very little ice in these straits.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_across_the_Belts
Generally though it is agreed Sweden started its super power ambitions during the king Gustav II Adolf, who dealt the Catholic side of the 30-year war (1618-48) decisive blows in the German states, and thus cemented the foothold of Protestantism in Northern Europe, with inventions like uniforms, and a largely constant standing army without mercenaries, which was the norm at the time (normally they just hired most of the soldiers for a battle, and next battle these mercenaries might fight on the other side if they offered better pay). Thus the Swedish army could win battles where they were outnumbered 5 or even 10 times, the other side had no conviction.
However the greatest revolution was under king Carl XI, who ruled between 1660-1697. He massively reduced the holdings and power of the Swedish aristocracy, and created a self owning farmer class, the trade off for the farmers was that a group of them according to the size of their lands, had to provide for the upkeep and well being of one soldiers family and his military equipment. The first conscription army.
Perhaps these changes was made possible because it was bloody cold and the feudal system suffered a subsequent economic and political collapse.
My paternal ancestor 11 generations ago emigrated from Elsass together with the count Johan Casimir, who was the father of Carl X, and grandfather of Carl XI, around 1630, and worked as his book-keeper at his estate. The interesting thing is that Carl X payed for the education of my paternal ancestor 10 generations back, so maybe he was my actual paternal ancestor! ;)

Canadians experience jolting 'frost quakes' as temperatures plunge
As temperatures around Toronto and across Ontario drop to -20 Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit), residents are reporting frost quakes that are powerful enough to shake houses and rattle nerves.
Usually found in extreme polar regions, the recent outbreak of frost quakes, known to meteorologists as cryoseisms, are now affecting many residents of Toronto, Canada’s most populous city.
The weather-related phenomenon, which can feel like an earthquake, happens when water and moisture deep underground freeze as the temperature drops.
Frost quakes typically occur between midnight and dawn, the coldest part of the night, thus many residents are being jolted awake by the booming sounds.
he effects of a cryoseism, as opposed to an earthquake, “are very localized,” according to the Maine Geological Survey. Thus, residents just a few hundred yards away from the impact zone may not experience anything out of the ordinary.
“The reason that the vibrations do not travel very far is that cryoseisms don't release much energy compared with a true earthquake caused by dislocation of rock within the earth,” the Maine Geological Survey says. “On the other hand, since cryoseisms occur at the ground surface they can cause significant effects right at the site, enough to jar people awake.”
In the majority of cases, frost quakes occur after heavy rain or snow when a large amount of water seeps into the ground. Toronto was hit by freezing rain followed by warmer temperatures, before the recent cold snap.

Death Toll From Europe Storm Reaches 13; UK, Germany Hit Hardest
5913
Germany and the UK bore the brunt of a storm that hit Europe on Monday with hurricane-strength winds and claimed the lives of at least 13 people, and caused major power outages and severely disrupted plane and train schedules in the region.
According to a Reuters report, at least seven people were dead in Germany with four deaths in the UK and casualties reported in the Netherlands, Denmark and France. However, an earlier Associated Press report had stated that there were at least five deaths in the UK and four were dead in Germany while two were reported killed off the German coast.
The Reuters report, citing German media, said that falling trees were the main cause of casualties in the country while one man drowned and a woman died after a wall collapsed on her. The same report, citing London police, said the storm may have damaged gas pipes resulting in explosions that damaged some houses in the city.
With winds gusting up to 99 miles per hour (160 kph), Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was forced to cancel a news conference when a crane damaged the Cabinet Office and trading on local markets was thin as traders remained stuck at home, Reuters reported.
At London's Heathrow airport, 130 flights were cancelled while Amsterdam's Schiphol airport cancelled 50, media reports said. And, nearly half a million properties in the UK lost power, Reuters reported, citing UK Power Networks.
Monday’s storm, which also disrupted the operation of the London Underground and nearby Stansted and Gatwick airports, is reported to be one of the worst storms to hit the country since 1987 when a storm killed 18 people and caused more than 2 billion pounds ($3 billion), according to Reuters, in current terms in
damage.

I am in Alberta and I can confirm that this December has been unusually cold even by our standards.
Other thing that sucks is that every time it does warm up for a day or two we have been getting freezing rain. This has happened 3-4 times now. Then the temperature plummets back down to -20 C leaving us with ice coated roads. I real pain in the ass.

At least there are no hurricanes in Canada.

Earlier this week a major storm system moved through western Europe after battering Ireland and England. Torrential rain and hurricane-strength winds hit Britain, leaving the country at a virtual standstill. The storms were the worst to hit the south of England since 1987. Two tornadoes were reported along England's southern coast. At least seven storm-related fatalities were reported.

Imagine how cold it would have been without GLOBAL WARMING.
I was listening to NPR this morning. They were blaming the cold snap on global warming. And, because global warming would continue, these colds snaps would probably get worse. I shit you not. :-[

Get Ready For a COLD Winter
Farmers' Almanac predicts a 'piercing cold' season
By Noah Rayman (http://nation.time.com/author/nraymantime/) Aug. 26, 2013165 Comments (http://nation.time.com/2013/08/26/get-ready-for-a-cold-winter/#comments)
This winter threatens (http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_FARMERS_ALMANAC?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT) to be “bitterly cold,” with below-average temperatures in two-thirds of the country. That’s if you believe the folksy — but often, they claim, accurate — Farmers’ Almanac.
The almost 200-year-old almanac again comes out Monday, and the AP reports it’s predicting a harsh winter, one that could even bring a blizzard to the first outdoor Superbowl in years.
“We’re using a very strong four-letter word to describe this winter, which is C-O-L-D. It’s going to be very cold,” managing editor Sandi Duncan said.
The Almanac is also describing the coming winter as “piercing cold” and “biting cold.”
The Farmers’ Almanac predictions are based on the same analysis of sunspots and tidal action, largely ignored by modern meteorologists, that the publication has used since its first issue, in 1818. The publication claims it’s correct 80 percent of the time.

We are getting ready to collapse down into the next solar minimum...They have been getting weaker since 1960...less and less input...leads to collapse.
The atmosphere that has been charged up with water vapor for years is dumping it rapidly...massive cooling down...or deflation showing up...
Without the QE...the entire global banking system would have imploded to oblivion by now.
The demand by all from the Universe is greater than the supply from the Universe.
All the models the scientists use are based on the just think positive ignore negative religion...the negative is not accounted for...
Paychecks are supplied to those who produce what the buyers or demand are consuming.
