For those who haven’t caught Storage Wars on A&E, the premise of the reality show involves people bidding on abandoned storage units at auction in the hopes of discovering high dollar items after the renters of the units have defaulted on their monthly payments.

American Auctioneers is the company featured in the show. At a recent AA auction, a man identified only as John, purchased an abandoned unit for $1000 in the hopes of recouping his investment and finding some treasure and turning a profit. It turns out that John hit it big, as the original owner of the contents of the storage unit apparently didn’t trust traditional security storage methods like bank safe deposit boxes, opting instead to hide his (or her) precious metals at a storage facility typical of any American city.

Unfortunately, no cameras were present for the auction or to capture John when he found what amounted to a gold mine in a blue Rubbermaid container. According to reports, the container held about 16 gold Spanish coins, silver Spanish dollars, and several gold and silver bars

.
The estimated value of the find is around $500,000.

Note to readers: If you’re going to hide your gold or other personal items in a storage unit, don’t forget to pay your rent!

why in the hell would anyone put 500.000.00 in a storage building ? When I lived in a rented lake house in Texas, I didn't have any place to hide my silver. The yard was too rocky to dig. There was no national forest around so I hid my silver in 5 gallon buckets marked "paint" in my storage unit. That was back in the days when silver was around $7 an ounce.

These shows will do anything for ratings. Notice they didn't show the hoard.

If there is any truth to the story then the finder is just another in a long line of dipshits that can't keep their mouth shut.

Dave Hester, the loudmouth asshat who was on Storage Wars, ended up suing A&E over the show being staged (salting units with items of interest).

The guy will be punished for "finding" that treasure.......Uncle Sam will charge him tax.......and if it is real he should have said nothing.

I knew it was staged the 2nd time I saw it, because in each show an interesting, unusual, and valuable item was found, completely hidden from the bidders. They really jumped the shark on the episode that nailed it for me, the tiny, rare 3-wheeled British car totally hidden behind a perfect wall of cartons. My wife kept watching it a few times and she agreed there was something salted in each show.
