as it's winter 5 months a year where i live, we are looking to buy a treadmill for the basement. my wife and i both probably walk at least 5 miles a day in the spring, summer, and fall, but this time of year kills us.

my wife needs something with a long track (she is 6'2") and we want it to be ifit compatible so we can load the google maps programs on it and walk paris, london, etc.

what's a good brand? all of them look the same to me.

Nordic trac cross country ski machines are a good option. They come up at auction here occasionally and only cost $15-$20 used. New they are in the $800 range.

I don't know anything about treadmills specifically but if you've got a Play It Again Sports store around it's a good place to check out.

They take up lots of space in the garage and get in the way.

Unless you get a very good one, they are crap, undersized motor and roller system. You might want to check out the ellipticals, I have found them to be much better for my knees and still give a good workout... but then they also need a sturdy track, etc. I find most home fitness equipment is too thin and plasticky for real world use.

Also, look into kettlebells, they can give you some strength in with cardio, and, they will protect you from injury when doing other non-exercise stuff, since they use compound movements that force the use of the small stabilizer muscles and give you overall better function.

I agree with ShortJohnSilver, you need a high quality machine. Cheap ones bounce when you run on them and feel like they can't take much full-on use. If it were me, I'd want one that has an option to incline the tread, because jogging at an incline is a way better workout than jogging a flat surface.

Fatsos are still making payments

Every Craigslist on earth has at least ten "slightly used" or "like new" treadmills for sale every day.

 don't bother...go for a walk instead and get some fresh air

hard to walk 5 miles when it is minus whatever for 5 months a year. you can make 2 or 3 miles, but then it's miserable. plus there is ice, and you can't get off the county road for cars because there is 4 foot of snow in the ditch. been watching craigslist here for months...nothing.

I dont know much about them , but the one I have is a smooth fitness 9.25, I've had it for about 10 years now I'm 5' 11" and it works fine for me, I was on it everyday for a couple of years now I maybe do 6 miles a week,

But like some one said "play it again sports" might be a better choice, I think this one was right at $2000,00 -10 years ago.

Good quality elliptical, for what it's worth it is smoother and less aggressive on running abuse.

Or get yourself some snow shoes.

Chad, of course everyone has their own opinion, but treadmills I think are boring. Which is why they collect dust and get piled with a lot of crap from non use.

Another option, is a stair climber. The kind that actually has rotating stairs, real steps that that move, not the funny ones you see girls use. That's the most brutal piece of equipment in the gym, imo. You don't get bored with it, because you are constantly trying to find your inner warrior to stay on the thing. You can keep track of how many floors you climb. I would try for a hundred floors in twenty minutes.

most of those machines are pretty tall, so make sure you have a high enough ceiling for it.

Easy enough to find ... just do a search for NORDIC.

I use a concept II rowing machine. It's harder, and gives an overall body musculature workout as well as cardio. Concept II is the brand trusted by collegiate rowers.
