At least 16 dead as volcano in western Indonesia erupts again, authorities saySeveral eruptions of Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra province sent lava and pyroclastic flows down the southern slopes up to 2.8 miles away, an official said. The number of dead could rise as the rescue efforts are hampered by darkness.Comments (4) (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/11-dead-volcano-indonesia-erupts-article-1.1598698#commentpostform)THE ASSOCIATED PRESSPUBLISHED: SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2014, 8:43 AMUPDATED: SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2014, 5:31 PM

MOUNT SINABUNG, Indonesia — The death toll from an Indonesian volcano that has been rumbling for months rose to 16 Sunday after rescuers found another charred corpse and a critically injured college student died in a hospital, officials said.
Mount Sinabung erupted again Saturday just a day after authorities allowed thousands of villagers who had been evacuated to return to its slopes, saying volcanice activity was decreasing. Rescuers found 14 bodies and rescued three people with burn wounds, said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Rescue efforts resumed Sunday and rescuers found another body about three kilometers (two miles) from the volcano's peak, said Lt. Col. Asep Sukarna, who led the operation. Another resident, a 24-year-old college student died in an intensive care unit, said an official at the Efarina Etaham hospital.

Among the dead were a local television journalist and four high-school students and their teacher who were visiting the mountain to see the eruptions up close, Nugroho said. At least three other people were injured and authorities fear the death toll will rise.

Sinabung in western Sumatra has been erupting for four months. Authorities had evacuated more than 30,000 people, housing them in cramped tents, schools and public buildings, but many were desperate to return to check on homes and farms.
On Friday, authorities allowed nearly 14,000 people living outside a five-kilometer (three-mile) danger zone to return after believing volcanic activity had decreased. Others living close to the peak have been returning to their homes over the past four months despite the dangers.
On Saturday, a series of huge blasts and eruptions thundered from the 2,600-meter (8,530-foot) volcano. Television footage showed villages, farms and trees covered in thick gray ash.
Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin. Mount Sinabung is among about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia and has sporadically erupted since September.

Indonesia volcano still active as search and rescue teams look for survivors, expert warnsAs rescuers continue sifting through volcanic ash in the aftermath of the Mount Sinabung eruption in North Sumatra, a volcanologist says the people on search missions need to stay out of harm’s way. A dark cloud has descended over Indonesia ever since Mount Sinabung rained hellfire upon unsuspecting villages Saturday.
Rescuers continued sifting through the gray volcanic ash that cloaks villages and farms in the province of North Sumatra Sunday — looking for any possible signs of life. At least 16 people have been confirmed dead.
But they need to be careful, because the mountain is still active, according to volcanologist Charles Mandeville, coordinator of Volcano Hazards for the U.S. Geological Survey.

"You don't want to be conducting these search and rescue missions when the volcano is poised to continue," Mandeville said. "You don't want to put the emergency responders in harm's way."
In an interview with the Daily News, Mandeville explained that a lava dome collapsed and created a hot avalanche known as a pyroclastic flow: flying ash, gas and volcanic rock.

"They are so lethal because they move at 100 miles per hours. You can't outrun these," he said.

The 8,530-foot volcano in western Sumatra had been dormant for 400 years until it started erupting four months ago, reported CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/01/world/asia/indonesia-volcano/).

Indonesia is a country with 130 active volcanoes and one of the densest populations in the world, especially in Sumatra and Java.
"You've literally got villages on the slopes of volcanoes," Mandeville said.

The country's Center for Volcanology and Geologic Hazard Mitigation monitors volcanos exceptionally well, Mandeville said.
The recent tragedy, he said, underscores the importance of heeding the warnings of the local volcano observatory and the local Indonesian emergency managers during these trying times.

interesting that there is activity in Yellowstone as well. I'd expect these things/volcanoes are connected subteraneously(?) around the world. Forecasting where the pressure is going to be released would be another thing altogether though.
