Who controls the production facilities? It isn't a free market anymore. In a free market, supply would quickly catch up with demand.

It has absolutely nothing to do with economics. Gun control has historically been an agenda of the tribe who issues money out of thin air. It was only inevitable that they would buy out most of the major gun and ammo manufacturers. It started in 1964 with Winchester, then Sig, Kimber, Bushmaster, DPMS, Harrington and Richardson, New England Firearms, Parker, Remington, Marlin, Thompson and Smith and Wesson.
After most of the aquisitions, quality dropped a little, they ceased to support some of the older models, began to offer a wide range of models (as opposed to perfecting a narrow range) and calibers and increased their market share through monopolistic practices.
Why would we think the same would not happen to the ammunition industry as well?
There are only a small handful of .22 rimfire ammunition manufacturers, making it easiest to control by the few. More than any other cartridge, the .22 LR is most responsible for getting younger or new shooters hooked on and trained in shooting sports.
The manufacturers of .22 LR have not even attempted to meet the demand. Quality has gone down while volume has dropped.

and then there is the destruction of brass shell casings.
i witnessed the destruction of 20+ tons at a metal recycling facility - i think it was last year.
smashed, recycled as brass metal. no re-loading allowed.
the manager that gave me that quick tour told me that they were PAID to destroy the casings, to make them unusable for re-loading.

Another problem is the flippers who wait like vultures for the ammo to hit the shelf while most are at work.

Strange that i can get federal bulk packs and every cci under the sun for reasonable prices locally. Must be that American hoarders don't have access to whatever the manufacturers have stored i Europe.
