Remember what I said about three years ago?......."The trash dumps of today will be the gold mines of tomorrow"........well, is happening now....read this month "Popular Science" and article by the name of "The Garbage Man".........he is grabbing all the plastic from the trash dumps and processing it to be used once again, he will become a very rich man........by the way, methane from the same place will be next.
Remember what I keep saying about water stocks.......listen and obey.....Ponce has spoken :)

I read a sci-fi book about a future race of super humans who enslave the rest of normal mankind and force them to scavenge through the garbage dumps of the world to harvest whatever resources they can find. If one was lucky enough to find an unopened package of batteries they were rewarded with the day off and extra food rations.

When my father was alive he used to take the household garbage to the damp. He usually came home with more salvage than he left with. He managed to build a bicycle for each of his 13 grand kids from the dumps. My father saved every used nail and bolt he ever had. He lived through the last depression and knew how to make do with what he could salvage. I think there are still coffee cans full of used nail, nuts, bolts, screws, used pipe fittings and various other things in the old family house.

Like the Pakistani who won the milking contest, even though he milked far less than the Brit and the German...

in a lot of communities, Garage Sales are one of the primary industries.
next stop for most of that didn't get sold at the garage sale = landfill.
but i think old unwanted plastic toys, for example, don't generate a lot of methane when they 'de-compose' (which they don't really, unless exposed to sunlight.)
the one methane facility I got a tour of was a 22 acre landfill with a crushed concrete top (i think that's where they use concrete slabs from demolished buildings).
all municipal garbage, and yard waste. and garbage like unwanted toys, now crushed beneath many more tons of stuff.
i'm pretty sure it's the biodegradeable stuff, like grass clippings and banana peels, that generates the methane.
OH YEAH - it generated 7 Megawatts (enough for about 350 homes).

It's an interesting subject. Norway is large on recycling, most of the population are required to sort their garbage into different fractions. Food waste, plastic and the rest. The first two are worth a lot of money since it's not required much energy to refine it into something that can be sold on the consumers.
The comical part about it all is that we pay to have our pre-sorted garbage taken away which they then sell and make profit on, on top of the subsidies. I tried to have a discussion about this subject one and that its wrong on so many levels, but as usual the brainwashed population would not have any of it. To put it in another way, the prices have not gone down since we started to recycle.

I used to have an automobile repair business. The motor oil recyclers paid me for the used motor oil. Then along came epa. Now they charge you to take your used drain oil. Protecting the environment.

Same here in Sweden, the price for Garbage collection is definitely increasing faster than inflation. Sweden actually buys Norwegian garbage to use in the incinerators, since Sweden don't produce enough garbage to run the incinerators we built...
