I don’t think it was clear in the article but the background was that Ms. Poklonskaya was working in Kiev prosecuting a high profile racketeering group in early 2014. In February this year, the gang joined the Euromaidan movement and got support from the new government, which instead filed fabricated criminal charges against Poklonskaya. She got angry and frightened and left for her native Crimea when she understood that Crimea was seceding and the attorney general was resigning. The rest is internet history.
