In the quiet suburbs of Palo Alto where the tech elite live, a modern day ark is taking shape.
Chris Robinson, a designer, began thinking about the how his family could surive an event similar to the 2011 Japanese Tsunami.
Now, he has almost finished his project - a giant 'tsunamiball' that can float away from its perch in his back garden, keeping its occupants safe inside.

LOL/ minor technicality.

I would fill in spots with an expanding styrofoam so that most of it would float even if broken. The wood would have to be all sealed first.

If I lived on an island or coastal area, I would do something like this. Imagine all your neighbors coming to visit at the first major tsunami warning. It better be strong enough to lock out the zombie hoards.

the worst thing would be if it caught fire and he had to start all over. Where have I heard that before?

When I look at that I'm thinking stability. Is he going to add a keel? Any kind of stabilizers like out riggers? I could see it just spinning along its axis.

When the tsunami comes will he just kick the tenant out? Would you leave if you were the tenant and a tsunami was coming? Maybe he is going to rent it to a young woman?

Its a survival craft a bit like one of these...........

Ive had plenty of training at piloting these and as long as you have speed you can go in a direction

This one above is better as it has a place for the driver with better visibility.

No, I would hit him over the head with somthing heavy multiple times, and throw him in the water, now it's mine. THEN I would find all the hot women and have a grand ole time.

The dam thing is both coasts are in danger. There are chunks of the Hawaiian islands that could break off and "depending" on the island send a nice unfriendly wave to centerpunch cali or any coastal landmass to the east of the islands. (Historically they think it did in the past, there is some evidence that points that cali got hit,)

On the east coast there is a volcanic island in the Canary Islands that has a high probability of having a huge chunk fall of and send a calling card to the east coast here.

In the op, nice ideal, if it is designed to take the crashing and bashing that may or will occur, and better have crash seats to protect the crew. Think of a cork, (as fishing/wine stopper) in rapids and over a waterfall, people are not corks so design for it.

Both are very possible and could have happened or did happen in the past, (Think there is some argument still going on) and for sure just like the predicted "big cali quake" that is predicted, it will happen, big time. The matter boils down is when, in our lifetimes or our kids>?<

Edit: When I was a kid living in National City (south of San Diego) in the 50's the odd's were 50% chance in 30 years. See that they still hold to the 30 year time line but the percentage has gone up, what 90%?
