On the 50th anniversary of the TV game show Jeopardy!, African-Americans finally have their own version of the show: Black Jeopardy! On this week’s episode of Saturday Night Live, the cast members and host Louis C.K. competed in the black version of the popular show where contestants win money by correctly asking the questions that would produce the answers on the board. Kenan Thompson played the host, who jokingly introduced himself as Alex Treblack.
“It’s Jeopardy’s 50th anniversary, and we’ve finally go our own,” he said to open the show.
But as much as the show is like its racially-inclusive counterpart, comedian C.K. — playing a professor of African-American studies at Brigham Young University and the only white person on the show — quickly finds out he’s out of his element.
The game show has the categories “It’s Been A Minute,” “That Girl,” “On Punishment,” “Had That Been Me,” “White People” and “Psssh!” Contestants Amir, played by Jay Pharoah, and Keeley, played by Sasheer Zamata start racking up money right away, with a clue like “She think she cute” resulting in the question “Who is Monique?” C.K.’s character, Mark, wasn’t so successful.
“It’s been a minute since he got a job,” Thompson’s character read out.
“Who is an unemployed fellow, black?” Mark guessed, receiving glares from his fellow contestants.
But things only got worse from there for Mark, especially when the contestants got to the final category: Rap songs that begin with the letter “n.”
