8.0 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Off Chile; Tsunami Strikes Coast
http://a.abcnews.com/images/International/ht_map_chile_prelim_kb_140401_16x9_992.jpg
A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.2 has struck off the coast of Chile, triggering a tsunami that has already started hitting the coastline.
The quake, which was centered 61 miles west-northwest of Iquique, Chile, and was 6.21 miles deep, was initially measured at 8.0, but was later upgraded, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a 6-foot tsunami that hit Pisagua, Chile, at 8:04 p.m. ET. There was some damage reported on roads linking northern towns, between Iquique and Alto Auspicio, but it was immediately clear how much.
ABC News producer Helen Hughes in Santiago, Chile, said there is a tsunami alert for all of Chile, Peru and Ecuador. Evacuation orders have been issued for the cities of Arica, Iquique and Antofagasta. All cities are along a low coast, and each has a significant climb to higher land further inland, Hughes said.

Two waves have hit Iquique and Pisagua, but none larger than 2 meters so far. Local experts say the first wave is not necessarily the strongest and people should not return to coastline until alert is lifted.
There have been numerous quakes in the same area over the past few weeks, but scientists have said it is not clear whether they were a sign that a major quake was coming.
A magnitude-6.7 quake rattled the area on March 16, and more than 100,000 people were briefly evacuated from low-lying areas. No tsunami resulted from that quake, which caused little damage.
In 2010, a magnitude-8.8 quake and ensuing tsunami in central Chile killed more than 500 people, destroyed 220,000 homes, and caused widespread damage to docks, riverfronts and seaside resorts.
The strongest earthquake ever recorded also happened in Chile, in 1960. The magnitude-9.5 tremor that killed more than 5,000 people.

300 women inmates escape jail in city of Iquique near quake's epicentre
About 16 of the women were soon recaptured after Chile's military sent a planeload of special forces to the area, the country's investigative police said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake generated a large tsunami with the biggest wave reported at 2.3 meters. The Chilean navy said the first big wave hit the coast within 45 minutes.
While no major damage was initially reported, the true scale of the damage has yet to become clear. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/04/02/article-2594774-1CC17B5300000578-119_634x461.jpg
