Michael Bloomberg Is Starting A Gun Control Organization To Take On The NRA

Former New York City mayor and very, very rich man Michael Bloomberg plans to take on the National Rifle Association and other Second Amendment advocates by forming and financing a new organization focused on gun control. He's pledged at least $50 million to the effort.

From The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/16/us/bloomberg-plans-a-50-million-challenge-to-the-nra.html):

The plans call for a restructuring of the gun control groups he funds, Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. They will be brought under one new umbrella group called Everytown for Gun Safety.
The strategy will focus not on sweeping federal restrictions to ban certain weapons, but instead will seek to expand the background check system for gun buyers both at the state and national levels.
Bloomberg told the Times that this new group will try to use the NRA’s own tactics against them, penalizing lawmakers whose stances on gun rights differ from the organization’s. “We’ve got to make them afraid of us,” is how he put it.
The former mayor also said that the effort will deviate from the standard playbook for gun control advocates, throwing less money into television campaigns and more money into field operations to drive single-issue voters, focusing primarily on female voters. The group will initially focus on 15 states, including Colorado, Washington, Texas, Montana, and Indiana.
The idea of Bloomberg throwing $50 million behind gun control could do a lot to even the scales—gun control lobbyists have long lacked benefactors with deep pockets like those on the opposing side. But Bloomberg faces a big liability: himself. He might not be the right face for the organization. Here’s how Bloomberg describes coming up with the $50 million budget:

“I put $50 million this year, last year into coal, $53 million into oceans,” he said with a shrug, describing his clean energy and sustainable fishing initiatives. “Certainly a number like that, $50 million. Let’s see what happens.”
$50 million: a mere bag of shells. Let’s see what happens! And Bloomberg’s not particularly humble about his philanthropy. In his own words:

I am telling you if there is a God, when I get to heaven I’m not stopping to be interviewed. I am heading straight in. I have earned my place in heaven. It’s not even close.

Yeah, I'll send him to the afterlife, no interview necessary. Unfortunately I think his soul will just be reborn on to this planet... so no go.

Yesterday there was one and today there are scores of Facebook pages (https://www.facebook.com/search/str/everytown%20for%20gun%20safety/pages-named) dubbed “Everytown for Gun Safety” for several states and even local communities; the work of gun rights (http://www.examiner.com/topic/gun-rights) activists waging guerrilla warfare against billionaire Michael Bloomberg (http://www.examiner.com/topic/michael-bloomberg)’s $50 million launch yesterday (http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/bloomberg-pledges-50m-fight-nra-article-1.1757801) of a new gun control (http://www.examiner.com/topic/gun-control) lobbying effort with the same name.
All of the Facebook (http://www.examiner.com/topic/facebook) pages have one thing in common. They all promote gun safety, including links to such things as the National Rifle Association’s “Eddie Eagle” program and the three key gun safety golden rules: Always keep guns pointed in a safe direction, always keep guns unloaded until ready to use, and always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.
The launch of so many Facebook pages in the wake of Bloomberg’s appearance yesterday on NBC’s Today (http://www.today.com/news/bloomberg-i-wont-run-president-plain-simple-2D79536229) show with Shannon Watts of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America (MDA), a group he funded underscores the ferocity of Second Amendment activists. Bloomberg’s new “Everytown for Gun Safety” organization consolidates MDA with Mayors Against Illegal Guns, another anti-gun organization funded by the former New York mayor.
But in the process of setting it all up, disguised as a “grass roots” effort, somebody in Bloomberg’s camp evidently forgot Facebook. That left the door open yesterday for activists to quickly register the name “Everytown for Gun Safety” (EGS) on Facebook, and launch a bushel of them over the past several hours as pro-gun sites that are now drawing viral attention and no small amount of laughter from the gun rights community.
At last count, there were individual Facebook pages for EGS chapters in Illinois, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota and South Carolina, and those are just examples. A quick glance also shows separate pages for EGS chapters in Washington (http://www.examiner.com/topic/washington), Texas, California, Florida and most other states as well. The Washington page has a red silhouette of the state with the message "No on 594," a reference to Initiative 594, the 18-page gun control measure.
Many of those states are among the ones Bloomberg’s $50 million so-called “grass roots” effort is targeting this year, according to yesterday’s New York Times (http://tinyurl.com/naz7ojt). That story identified Washington, Colorado, Texas, Montana and Indiana among 15 states where he will put the “Everytown” financial emphasis.
While NBC’s story about Bloomberg’s new campaign insisted he “isn’t trying to outspend the NRA,” the New York Times piece specifically noted that the NRA “has spent only $20 million annually on political activities.” The former mayor insisted in his NBC interview that “This is not a battle of dollars, it’s a battle for the hearts and minds of America, so that we can protect our children, protect innocent people.”
Second Amendment activists look at it from a different perspective. This is a battle to protect the constitutional rights of the next generation from people like Bloomberg who think their deep pockets somehow entitle them to buy elections and force their philosophy on the entire nation.
