A southern New Jersey woman has filed a federal lawsuit alleging that state’s Motor Vehicle Commission wrongly violated her First Amendment rights by preventing her from having a vanity license plate reading “8THEIST.”
The woman, Shannon Morgan, filed the suit on Thursday, reports the South Jersey Times (http://www.nj.com/cumberland/index.ssf/2014/04/new_jersey_woman_files_lawsuit_over_atheist_licens e_plate.html).
Morgan, who identifies as an atheist, is represented in federal court by Ayesha N. Khan of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, a Washington, D.C.-based tax-exempt organization (Federal ID #53-018464 (https://www.au.org/donate/faqs)) that has expended considerable time and energy attacking the tax-exempt status of religious organizations.
“The state of New Jersey is favoring religion while disparaging non-belief,” Barry W. Lynn, the group’s executive director (and an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ), told the Times.
“This license plate issue may seem like a small matter but it is indicative of a much larger problem,” the ardent atheist also said. “Atheists are often treated by the government as second-class citizens.”
Morgan has proclaimed that the denial of personalized plate is based on religious bias.
“There is nothing offensive about being atheist,” she told the Times. “I should be able to express my sincerely held beliefs with a license plate just like everyone else.”
Morgan alleges that she was denied when entered the letters (and a number) “8THEIST” into The Garden State’s motor vehicle commission database. However, she claims, when she suggested the word “BAPTIST” for her license plate, the word representing a Protestant denomination was not identified as unacceptable.
According to the lawsuit, Morgan “believes that the commission’s decision to deny her a plate that reads ’8THEIST’ but to allow her one that reads ‘BAPTIST’ expresses a preference for theistic religious belief over non-theistic belief.”
Morgan has also said that she tried to contact the commission for an explanation but received no response.
“We review every request personally,” motor vehicle commission representative Sandy Grossman told the Times. “We review them for anything that’s offensive.”
Morgan has asked the federal court to force state officials to allow her to ride around advertising her pious belief that no gods exist. She also wants a guarantee that there is no viewpoint discrimination in future license-plate selection criteria.
Naturally, Morgan’s attorneys have also asked that they be richly reimbursed for their fees and expenses.
Grossman added that the commission has issued godless vanity plates previously.
“We have no objection and continue to issue plates with these types of configurations,” Grossman told the Times.
Last August, the president of American Atheists in Cranford, N.J. (pop. 22,625) successfully convinced the motor vehicle commission to reverse a decision denying the letter-word combination “ATHE1ST” for his vanity plates.

Kind of have to agree with her. What's the big deal? I bet you could have an I Heart Jesus plate.

Maybe someone else already had that plate?

Ten foot pole would not be long enough, some would trash any car that had plates like that.

At least here in the bible belt.

Let me understand this... You say this woman is a fool for wanting a license plate that reflects her beliefs? This coming from someone who believes in a savior in the sky that lets his creations suffer in his creation! I will defend your rights to believe as you wish, however devoutly religious people always seem to persecute others that have differing believes. This shows their true colors. I will remain agnostic and true to my core beliefs of knowledge before blind faith!

Is the person a fool that questions authority... or the one that blindly follows it?

New Jersey reserves the right to deny anything there, I'm sure.

Probably had to with how hard it would be to pronounce the license plate for their troopers.

[quote]Let me understand this... You say this woman is a fool for wanting a license plate that reflects her beliefs?
Don't you mean her lack of beliefs?

This coming from someone who believes in a savior in the sky that lets his creations suffer in his creation!
Why does the savior have to be in the sky?
If you did believe in a savior, would you want to live in a world where no one suffered at the cost of everything in your life being manipulated and predetermined by the savior?

I will defend your rights to believe as you wish, however devoutly religious people always seem to persecute others that have differing beliefs. This shows their true colors.
As I will defend your right to have no belief in a greater power then yourself.

Devoutly religious people can be the biggest hypocrits, but there can be/is a big difference between a devout religious person and someone that believes in God.

I will remain agnostic and true to my core beliefs of knowledge before blind faith!
I bet many of your core beliefs and knowledge were formed from the religious beliefs of others more then you know , or will admit.

Speaking on blind faith...many atheists believe in ghosts/spirits, aleins and an infinate universe...why?
Is this not blind faith in something they can't prove exists?

Is the person a fool that questions authority... or the one that blindly follows it?
Both may be, or may not be. If you believe in any other authority then God, then yes fool. Blind faith in the creator does not have to be foolish.

Not attacking your morals or lack of belief system...I've thought at times, what a novel world an atheist must live in.
A world where you are only bound by some other man's law, which for the most part were not made law to benefit people, other then the law makers and their friends.
A world where there is no such thing as sin, or consequence for one's actions.
A world where anything goes and a person is only bound by each individules set of morals.

If I were an atheist, I think life would lose all meaning. Human life would have no value. And this very short time we are here on this planet would seem pointless/useless.

Would harming others, or killing for no reason be wrong? Would homosexuality, beastiality, pedophilia and incest really be wrong if there is no such thing as sin, or consequence? Atheist Jews prove all the time, that they don't think so.

There is good and evil in this world, and right and wrong...not necessarily the same thing.
I'm convinced most evil people have no belief in God.

If I were living as an atheist. I could only equate the feeling as to be sailing a boat without a rudder.

Its obvious who this woman's real God is she worships, The STATE.

She begs her God to be allowed to have certain plates on her car. She begs her God to protect her from other religious zealots. She begs her God to bring her safety and security. She pays homage to her God by throwing herself at the alter of STATISM.

The most hardcore religious people on planet earth call themselves Atheist. But the God they truly worship, the God they can not live without, the God that punishes non believers and praises devout cult followers, is their one true God they blindly worship.

The entire belief in 'Government' is a religious faith based indocturnation cult myth. When people identify as an 'Atheist' what they are really saying is "No God but the STATE".

Once in a while I turn on the liberal news channel to see their warped perspective on things. You'll quickly notice that they all claim to be victims of something/everything...and the only answer/solution, is to have more government laws protecting them.
Never do they claim/promote personal responsibility for themselves/their actions, or do they preach that parents need to be more involved in their children's lives...that's what government is for!
Really messed up bunch.

If her local regs are similar to Colorado, here's why they denied it. Here, you're not allowed to replace letters with numbers that look like or sound like the letters they are intended to replace. For instance, the word "house" would be allowed, while "h0us3" would not be. So she wanted "8theist" probably because "athiest" was already taken, but it was against the regulations, not any discrimination against her personally.
