Colorado is a political bell weather. It is an interesting mix of rural and city, hippy and frontierspeople, gun nuts and gun control laws, new west and old west. It is perhaps the purplist of purple states. And right now Rand Paul is not quite crushing Hillary Clinton, but soundly ahead of her in this very important electoral state.
The assumption by Dems is that Hillary will pull deep into the female Republican vote if they can sell her has a moderate (which she is not.) The hope is that in the wake of Obama, Clinton won’t put as many independents off as she might have without the Obama presidency. This equation works if the Republicans play the same game they’ve played for the last 5 presidential elections.
It does not work however if the whole GOP voting dynamic is fundamentally shifted around by a new type of Republican with broad appeal to independents and young people. The Hillary people are very scared of a Rand Paul presidential bid. The coronation might not happen after all.

The poll comes as speculation is rising about the 2016 GOP presidential field and provides insight into a state that was crucial in the 2012 election.
The poll might also shed some light on where Paul could outflank his GOP counterparts — among young voters. While Clinton leads Bush by 21 points and Huckabee by 11 points among 18-to 29-year-olds, Paul matched the former secretary of state in the age group, with both scoring 43 percent.
Paul also had a strong edge against Clinton among respondents who identify as independent voters. 48 percent of independent voters favored Paul, while just 37 perfect favored Clinton.
