Chicago police face overwhelming gun crime as 45 people shot over weekend

Police officials point to need for stricter gun laws after city suffers bloody Easter weekend in which nine people were killed

A senior Chicago police officer said that parts of the city are being overwhelmed by gun violence, after a weekend in which nine people were shot dead and at least 36 – including six children – were wounded.

Ronald Holt, the commander of the Chicago police department’s special activities division, said that the city was witnessing “fratricide” among young men who had come to believe “that the only way to resolve a conflict is to get a gun and go shoot to kill”.

“To tackle gun violence where it is overwhelming communities with the extraordinary loss of lives at an alarming pace, we must deal with it as a social disease and health issue,” Holt, whose 17-year-old son Blair was shot dead on a bus in 2007, told the Guardian in an email.

His remarks came as Chicago suffered its bloodiest weekend of the year. Dozens of residents were shot in a series of separate incidents. On the city’s south side, five children aged between 11 and 15 were shot while walking home from a park on Sunday evening.

The four girls and one boy were asked if they were affiliated with a gang, and then shots were fired from a light-coloured sedan, a police spokesman said. An 11-year-old girl was in a critical condition in hospital after being shot in the neck. A 14-year-old girl was in a serious condition after suffering a shot to her abdomen. A 14-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl were stable after being shot in the left leg and right arm respectively. Another 14-year-old girl suffered a grazed buttock.

The shootings occurred less than a mile from the south-side porch where Gakirah Barnes, a 17-year-old girl, died after being shot nine times the previous weekend (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/apr/19/chicago-deadly-shooting-guns-rahm-emanuel-2014). “We are looking at whether this could have been a retaliation for previous shootings,” Andrew Holmes, a community organiser, said on Monday morning.

About two hours after the five children were shot on Sunday evening, a 15-year-old girl was shot in the back while sitting in a car at a traffic light in the north-west of the city. Police said that a group of three men had flashed gang signs before one opened fire.

At least nine people were killed around the city over the Easter weekend, including 16-year-old Jordan Means, who, along with 18-year-old Anthony Bankhead, was found shot dead in an apartment on the south side on Saturday morning. Means’s mother, Camille Cochran, told local media that the pair were shot over a dispute that had been raging on Facebook.

The weekend’s death toll brought the total number of suspected homicides so far this year to 90, compared to 92 at this point in 2013, according to figures compiled by RedEye Chicago (http://homicides.redeyechicago.com/). Superintendent Garry McCarthy on Monday compared the task his department faces as it tries to tackle gun violence to “drinking from a firehose”.

“We can do things to improve what’s happening, but until such time as we get some help with the gun laws in the state of Illinois, we’re up against it,” McCarthy told CBS News (http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2014/04/21/7-dead-37-wounded-in-weekend-shootings/). But Illinois law has recently moved towards looser gun controls. The first permits allowing residents to carry concealed firearms, under a law passed by the state legislature last year, were sent out last month.

The Guardian reported on Saturday (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/apr/19/chicago-deadly-shooting-guns-rahm-emanuel-2014) that a feud between rival rappers had been linked to a series of shooting deaths in the city, including that of Barnes and, two days later, Mario “Big Glo” Hess. Hess, an up-and-coming rapper formerly known as “Blood Money”, had recently received a $50,000 record deal advance.

Holt, whose special activities division works to tackle gang violence, said that some rappers from Chicago “can't seem to loose themselves from their own gritty and dangerous surroundings” even as they receive lucrative contracts and progress in the music industry.

“It would do the rap and hip-hop industry some good if gang violence was denounced and acknowledged as being a part of the problem,” said Holt. “Never before in the history of any American music genre have we associated murder and pistol-play with such consistency as we have witnessed in the rap and hip-hop world of music.”

Yup, this is the police's fault. They dropped the ball. Maybe the solution is to just go home, eat donuts, and let everyone kill each other.

seems like everything is going according to plan. hip hop has turned them all in to gangbangers. Perhaps the number of deaths of innocent people will decline now they can conceal carry. It will take a while and a few self defense deaths before the gang members start to think twice about threatening the general public. I would say a few years is needed and lots of publicity.

I also remember they or NY had a similar experience last year with about 35 people getting shot in one weekend. Was that easter as well?

It's time to check the behavior of all those errant and troublesome guns.

My simple question, is how do you fix this problem?

More police? Less police? Seems like the best solution might be to just back away, let the slaughter continue until it dies itself out. Maybe if more folks had guns to protect themselves, the good would prevail over evil?

I'm just throwing these questions out there because I don't know.

How do you fix a problem like Chicago, or Detroit? Is there even a way?

You start by doing some exterior decorating.

You go to city hall and start doing some lampost redesigning

This Fast Food Restaurant Is The Sad Result Of Gun Control

A reporter entered the location for lunch to find a startling renovation.

Few major cities have been more influenced by the left’s anti-gun crusade than Chicago. As a result, it is now among the most dangerous cities in the world as shooting incidents are at times an hourly occurrence in the Windy City.
Over the Easter weekend, for instance, at least nine people were killed (http://rt.com/usa/dead-injured-chicago-violence-820/)in various shootings, while another 32 were hurt. Five of the injured – all children – were shot during a drive-by in the Park Manor district of the city, according to reports.

Of course, such an outcome is unfortunately par for the course when criminals are assured by strict gun laws that they will be the only armed individuals on the street.

That realization apparently hit the owners of a Subway restaurant on the corner of 116th Street and South Halstead recently. As a local CBS affiliate (http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2014/04/24/bulletproof-subways-a-sign-of-violent-times/)indicated, a reporter entered the location for lunch to find a startling renovation: the installation of bullet proof glass between the employee area and the dining room.

The restaurant, situated near two neighborhoods with a history of gang violence, not only requires customers to interact with staff through the impenetrable glass; they are also required to use the restroom elsewhere.
According to the report, public facilities have been closed at this location, leading to many customers requesting sanitary wipes since they cannot wash their hands before eating.

Bulletproof Subway restaurants are apparently not limited to the violent streets of Chicago. At least two other cities with a long history of both gun violence and leftist leadership, Detroit and Oakland, also boast franchises with the protective sandwich setups.

Certain professions require a willingness to put one’s life on the line during each shift. Any city in which “Sandwich Artist” includes such a description, however, is almost guaranteed to have some of the nation’s most draconian gun restriction laws – along with a Democrat mayor.

At this point only such extreme measures such as National Socialism will work.

The origin cause of the problem is from a completely rigged metals market, and extreme fiat money creation.

There are simple (not easy) fixes to this problem. The people will not, however, accept the fixes. Therefore the problem must increase as a runaway fire spreading through dry woods. As the weather warms up, the savages will be more active. Although we are not seeing global warming, it will be a hot summer.

That might work if not for the fact that they are paid to reproduce faster than they can kill each other. Ending welfare would help on two fronts. 1. They couldn't afford to reproduce at that rate anymore. 2. They might actually get a job and have something better to do.

The DNR has a good idea with deer tags. As long as people are willing to be shot then then the state ought to be willing to make some money off it. How about human tags at a grand a pop. Shoot someone who is really obnoxious to you and tag their toe. Sort of a GET OUT OF JAIL FREE card. This does four things. First it decriminalizes the act [as an example those marijuana stamps the state of Iowa issues ... actually these don't decriminalize but drop the fine to 1/3rd] and second those of us who are really obnoxious will automatically know we have ticked someone off and can carry the means to defend ourselves. When you do so you take the toe tag intended for you off the corpse and place it on the aggressor. Third it makes the state more solvent. Fourth it reduces excess population.

Call the system Post Birth Abortion just to make it politically correct.

[Hope there is some satire detected in the above]

Ending welfare at this point would worsen the situation, imo. Welfare is being reduced naturally through inflation, which is probably the reason for this current situation. Welfare if kept at real world levels to begin with was the solution. They have welfare programs here, but provide only such raw food items that require much more work to prepare, such that nobody would like at all to be on the program.

Pass open and concealed carry laws. Make it mandatory for anyone over 18 years old to own a firearm.

Pass open and concealed carry laws.

Do you fully understand the chaos that could occur when a gun-totin' passerby witnesses a live drill event and assumes it is real? Children could be shot at these live drill events and then real death certificates would have to be issued rather than the imaginary ones.

There should be no drills. Drills are the precursor to CIA sponsored false flag events.
