I have a friend who travels a lot. He recently sent me a write up of his latest trip to Europe. Here's an excerpt from it at the point where he is waiting for his plane in San Francisco:


Soon the first leg of our trip to Prague was behind us, and we found ourselves with about five hours to wait in San Francisco for the next leg of our trip -- to Amsterdam. Then I came up with a brilliant idea: I thought I would do a time test to see when a young person came along how long he/she would wait after sitting down before taking out a digital device. Soon along came a young man. He sat down. In about 1 ½ minutes he pulled out his smart phone. I knew he could do it! Nearly everyone else in this waiting area was already holding some pocket device, so why should this subject be any different? Maybe I’ll do a research paper on this area of human activity. How boring this life must be without interacting with a hand-held device.
