The Obama administration has issued a clear warning to the first state to drop the Common Core State Standards.

The U. S. Department of Education said in a letter to Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz that the state must prove its own standards are just as challenging, or else risk of losing its waiver from the Bush-era No Child Left Behind law and have its federal funding in jeopardy.

“Because the [Indiana Department of Education] will no longer implement those standards, IDOE must amend its [Elementary and Secondary Education Act] flexibility request and provide evidence that its new standards are certified by a state network of [Institutions of Higher Education] that students who meet the standards will not need remedial coursework at the postsecondary level,” the letter says.

Indiana is the first of the 44 states that adopted Common Core to repeal the controversial K-12 math and English standards.

Ritz said in a statement she is confident in the state’s new standards and said her department would “demonstrate full compliance with the flexibility waiver.”

“To address the issue of college and career-ready assessments, the department has undertaken the most extensive review and overhaul of academic standards in Indiana’s history,” Ritz said. “Moving forward, we will respond to USED within the next two months with amendments that capture steps we have taken to ensure full compliance with our flexibility waiver.”

The letter from the U.S. Education Department demonstrates “just how weak the phrases ‘state-led’ and ‘voluntary’ became when used to describe Common Core,” wrote Brittany Corona, a domestic policy researcher at the Heritage Foundation.

When the Indiana legislature passed the repeal of Common Core, the bill stated new standards would be in place by July 1, in time for the start of the 2014-2015 school year.

“The problem is that the administration does not view its new standards or testing regime as ‘meeting expectations’ – despite the fact Indiana’s pre-Common Core state standards were ranked among the highest in the nation,” Corona added.

Other Indiana education officials are concerned; Indiana State Board of Education member Brad Oliver said losing the waiver could be costly.

“Based on what I know right now, I am very concerned that our waiver could be in jeopardy,” he said. “The repercussions of losing our waiver are more than just financial. It would immediately have an impact on local districts.”

Empty threat. The last thing the federal government wants is independent state governments. They keep them dependent by those federal credits. It is what keeps them tied to foreign potentates.

It's not so empty when states have their hands out all the time for $$. State politicians love suckling at the federal tit more than they listen to their own constituents. Feds know it, hell most state residents know it. So to them that's like cutting off their "life blood". But I agree, the best thing the states could do is tell the FED's to go fuck themselves and refuse to take any money from them AND prevent taxes from leaving their states to the government.

Common core is a ridiculous curriculum. It tells the children to teach the parents how the new math works. The parents are supposed to be the ones helping the children! That's the point though, right? Get the kids dependent on the state from the cradle to the grave. Keep on minimizing the role of the parent until the home is broken and all that's left is the love for the state. Soon they will outlaw homeschooling and force all private schools to adopt common core standards. In just two short years they have taken over math and now they're moving onto science. Once they write the science book it will be like we're back in Galileo's time where we all have to accept that the Earth is flat and any naysayers are locked away.

Quoted for truth, which again is why I think the armed Bundy stand off took them off guard. They weren't expecting the sheep to bring weapons.. They know damn well what we think, how we communicate, and how we feel about them. These are maneuvers of desperation to preserve their stolen power. Consider them as such and handle yourself accordingly.

That is why they are in overdrive to cast Bundy a Racist bigot for his comments...but people in blogosphere are effectively separating the issue of personal belief and Federal overreach.

They also tried to search cars that where armed to the teeth and they were told to stand down by they occupants and they did.

Yep heard that as well. They sure as hell know the population is pissed at their mishandling of everything, corruption, theft, murder. All by those who call themselves our "leaders". If they would of fired a shot that day at the stand off, it would of ignited an outright revolt. I think they know it won't take much to ignite this powder keg. I guess the only question is do we end up like the Balkans? Or Do we end up a new United States without a Federal Government?

I love how my money is stolen from me (crime) under threat of violence (crime) and then used as a political weapon (crime) to subjugate (crime) and enslave (crime) peaceful non violent individuals.

There is no such thing as 'Federal Funding' because the 'Federal Government' has no money. If you percieve them to have money, its because it was STOLEN from innocent non violent individuals first.

Basically the 'Federal Government' steals your money, wastes most of it, pays off their friends and then uses the last little scraps to hire a PRIVATE COMPANY to complete the task at hand.

And at this point in the game, if you have your children in a Public School YOU are the problem. There is NOTHING in school for children. NOTHING. Unless you call Pavlovian Conditioning and State run Propaganda 'education'.

Your belief that there is money is the problem. There is none.

Your belief that there is money is the problem. There is none.

Only if you believe the scribbles of insane lobotomized monkeys (sometimes called 'politicians'). Do you IMAGINE that if the 'politicians' say that only gold and silver are money, that their scribbles somehow alter reality?

'Money' is a medium of exchange. I DECIDE what money is to me. Not you or anyone else.

If two people are voluntarily interacting and trading, is it up to YOU or any 'politician' to decide if what they are trading with is 'money'?

Knock off the personal attacks. Your statement doesn't have anything to do with this thread topic.

I saw some examples of the "new math" where what's most important is "how you feel" about the "process" of navigating from one number to the other. Kids who simply write down the answer are being penalized for not "explaining their thought/emotional process" in getting to that answer.

Now, when I was in elementary school, I turned in my math homework one day and I just had the answers, I didn't show any of my work. In front of the whole class my teacher asked if I was using a calculator to just get the answers, and I said no. He picked up a piece of chalk and put a problem on the board and asked me to come up and just write the answer, which I did. Impressed, I got an A and my teacher took me out to a pizza lunch. Under common core I would have failed.

LOL. Your debate tactics are hilarious. Nice straw man argument. You set up, then knock down. Your truly an amazing thinker.

No I don't have a 'marriage license'. I've n been married to the same woman for 14 years, and I never asked the states permission to do so. How did I do that?

"... the state must prove its own standards are just as challenging, or else risk of losing its waiver from the Bush-era No Child Left Behind law and have its federal funding in jeopardy."

The feds know no state will be able to "prove its own standards are just as challenging" because the feds are the judge of that.

So this isn't a legitimate ultimatum that Indiana could reasonably hope to satisfy. It's just plain old extortion.

If Indiana did not feel they could refuse the bribery offered to them by the feds to sign on to Common Core, it is most unlikely that Indiana will feel that they can reject this extortion now by the feds.

This is a pretty good presentation on common core. Introduces a lot that I never knew about. Why are they pushing this thing through? Demanding standards that they have not even decided upon yet? It makes no sense and reeks of an insidious agenda.
