=================================================

The popular online wallet Dogevault is offline, large amounts of Dogecoin appear to have been stolen

Dogevault is a popular online wallet, where people can store and send Dogecoin. It provides no advantage over a normal Dogecoin wallet however, and generally online wallets are regarded as risky, since if the site gets hacked or the owner goes rogue, then you lose the coins that were stored in the online wallet.

It appears something has gone very wrong with Dogevault. The site is down, the server has simply been shut off. This means everyone who uses Dogevault cannot access their coins. There have been no announcements from the owner of Dogevault about what is happening, which is completely inappropriate in this situation.

A user of Dogevault is reporting that 950,000 Dogecoin were

transferred out of his wallet just before the site was taken offline, as can be seen in the transaction record below. Other Dogevault users are reporting the same thing, that all of their Dogecoin was transferred out of their wallet before the site went down. This suggests that Dogevault has been hacked, and this could be a worst case scenario. It is unknown at this time how much Dogecoin has been stolen. Dogevault is an extremely popular online wallet though, so losses could be massive. I will update when I get more information on this situation.

Update: the 950,000 stolen Dogecoin ultimately ended up in a new mega wallet, with other coins that were possibly stolen from Dogevault. This wallet contains 111 million Dogecoin: https://dogechain.info/address/DHKM6NDUUv9kaHAGi1QU7MRBNKfQiAdP3F There is also another address with 2.6 million Dogecoin linked to Dogevault. It is uncertain at this time if this actually represents stolen Dogecoin, if it does this is one of the biggest Dogecoin robberies in history.

Holding my entire stash of 3 Mercury Dimes ever so tightly.....

Holding my silver the same. For virtual currencies you REALLY have to know indepth how the wallet service works in order to trust it. I have mine at blockchain.info but they don't hold bitcoins themselves. It's more of a public / private key repository. They have the public key, you hold the private key to spend and receive funds. That is a more trust worthy hosted solution. They are currently overhauling their service to do tri-key implementation. Still not holding any funds, but if you lose your public and private key and didn't keep a backup, they'll use the 2 remaining keys to regain your access. That is if I understand the tri-key system correctly and I might not.

This is all new territory, and will require time to mature as a technology. It's not ideal to everyone, but to be able to spend something without government control, creation, or oversight is certainly empowering.

"It's not ideal to everyone"

You sure got that right. It is sounding more complicated all the time as to which exchange to use, what wallet is best, how to hold a private key, tax ramifications, and on and on. Not something in it's present state that will help it gain mass appeal.
Best of luck though!

All depends on what you want to do with virtual currencies really. If you want to spend it in the dark net. Create a new wallet connected via Tor, use a trust-less mixing service to fund the wallet, then use that wallet to fund your account at whatever black market you choose to do business at. That's the secret and highly inconvenient way.

The way I'm using virtual currencies is doing some ping pong trading at cryptsy.com with currencies that are low but have high volume to ensure enough liquidity. I also have my primary wallet in blockchain.info with a number of different Public addresses linked to it. I also have a different wallet on my personal computer that I use for playing at Satoshi dice, or giving / receiving tips on bitcointalk.org. I could link them all together to the same address, but then everyone would see how much I have. So I obfuscate it for obvious reasons.

Could also use it as a standard wallet on your computer or at the blockchain. Never post or give out the address and you can manage just the single account to make it easier on yourself.

Again, all depends on what you're wanting to do with it. Doge started as a joke and took off onto a life of it's own. I've own some at the side I trade at, but that's about it.

Doge started as a joke and took off onto a life of it's own. I've own some at the side I trade at, but that's about it.

When I had about 331K Dogecoin, I never used Dogevault to store it. I used the standard Dogecoin wallet client on my computer and I just encrypted it and backed up my wallet.dat file. Dogecoin was my best trade ever and I used the profits to buy Credits(Cr). I still have some Dogecoin but I have only 31K DOGE.

My last Crypto trade was when I traded some DOGE and some BTC to buy more Credits (Cr) on the Crypto Rush exchange before Crypto Rush did a "Mt Gox". I currently do not do any trading, however, I have been concentrating on earning (winning) free Bitcoin from the various Bitcoin internet faucets to slowly buildup by Bitcoin position (currently earning between 125,000 to 150,000 satoshi per week) while I am waiting for the next downturn. I do use an online Blockchain wallet to temporarily store my bitcoin earnings before transferring them to my personal Bitcoin QT wallet. In addition to my BTC earnings, I have a total of 0.231 BTC that I bought (using FRNs) via Coinbase on Apr. 9 and Apr. 10 when the price was much lower than it is now. I am waiting for the next BTC $ price drop to sub-$400 to spend more FRNs to "nibble" on BTC but in the meantime, I am working the BTC faucets to earn some bitcoin.

Sounds like a pretty good strategy. I've got like 88k worth of Potcoin in cryptsy waiting for the price to rise again. It took a huge drop after a ton of them were stolen from crypto rush. So I'm in a hold position there.

Darkcoin is doing pretty well on cryptsy as well. A huge amount of volume, usually on average here for the past week +600 BTC a day. There are a ton of others and I've spread out some of my btc winnings. Some of have been good bets, others not so much. But that's how it goes and I don't trade with more than I'm comfortable with losing. :)

I felt very lucky to not get caught up in the Crypto Rush exchange fiasco. I felt very lucky that I was able to trade the DOGE and BTC to buy a lot of Credits (Cr) before Crypto Rush "died" a horrible death. I will admit that it scared me in what could have happened to me at Crypto Rush. However, I plan to eventually use some of my BTC faucet earnings to buy alt coins. Probably more Credits (Cr). I have not decided how/when I will spend my earnings but I will continue to earn more bitcoin from the faucets for the time being. I will also continue to learn more about crypto trading since I am still a newbie to cryptos. I am not a member at bitcointalk.org forum but I do lurk there on a daily basis to read the various threads there. It is very interesting and I am glad that I am doing this.

The main alt coin that I am keeping track of and have a sizable position in is Credits(Cr). I still think that Credits (Cr) will be good crypto IMO and I will not give up on it since I have a decent position with this crypto but the devs need some help with marketing since were no updates on the poker room or anything else for that matter since the launch. At this point, I have to give the Credits "marketing" campaign an "F" because it is non-existent since the launch but hopefully it will get better if someone else handles marketing. I will have to see.

Tell me about it. I was one of the first people to support PIcoin (only 3.14 coins EVER) when it came out. I mined a pretty sizable portion. Then learned on launch date that the devs pre mined quite a bit of it, then just abandoned it. Another set of devs took it over, then they were marketing and promoting it better then again devs went poof..... I still have a large number of PIcoins. But doubt anything will go anywhere with them now. It's frustrating.

I sold them all at 0.00003100 BTC. They are now 0.00000646 BTC. I bought most of my Potcoin around the 0.00000646 BTC price originally, mind you. Potcoin has been the most profitable cryptocurrency I've been involved in to date.
:)

I wouldn't expect another rally, but anything is possible. Remember Kittehcoin went from 1 Satoshi to 100 Satoshi, then back down to 1 Satoshi. Should give you a hint how this works.

Credits has been a major let down since of the lack of support from the developer. It's one college student guy and apparently he's not really doing much anymore, so we may be fucked. Hope I didn't make a bad call. All the fundamentals are good, but if the developer(s) stop developing, there's little hope.

I have been keeping up by lurking on the Credits(Cr) thread on Bitcointalk.org and, supposedly, the main dev (Dnaanders) has been busy with work and his final exams so I will give him benefit of the doubt but I will expect some sort of update at the very minimum. The worse case scenario for it in my opinion is that it eventually becomes a dead coin if the devs stop working on it and abandon it and the miners stop mining it. I do not think that this worse case scenario will play out but the devs need to post an update on where they are on this and post it soon before people give up on it. As I mentioned, I do like the underlying fundamentals of Credits and I do not plan to unload any but at the same time, I am not planning to add any Credits (Cr) to my current position. I am just watching it to see what happens with it. I have been concentrating on earning (winning) bitcoin from the various bitcoin faucets on the Internet.

At this point with Credits (Cr), I am going to continue to watch the bitcointalk.org thread on it and see what develops. I do not plan to unload any but I am not planning to add any more to my current position. As far as I am concerned, there is a lot of "noise" on Bitcointalk.org. What I mean by "noise" is that there are so many crypto coins coming out and I just filter out most of the altcoin announcements there and concentrate on any news on the alt coins that I currently have which are Litcoin, Dogecoin, Credits(Cr) and Emucoin. In terms of Bitcoin, I will continue to earn (win) more Bitcoin from the bitcoin faucets. So far, as of now, I have earned almost 70,000 satoshi of Bitcoin. Perhaps there is a slim chance that I can earn at least 200,000 satoshi before 11 AM Sunday, May 18, 2014 (end of my bitcoin earnings week for me) if I can maintain my earnings pace. Anything's possible. I will have to see how the rest of this week plays out on the bitcoin earnings front.
