View Full Version : Mosin Nagant

So, I bought a Mosin Nagant today off a friend. All the numbers match. She was made in 1939, so she's 75 years old! Everything looks really good, the bolt moves smoothly. There's a fair amount of cosmoline I'll need to remove to get her in serviceable condition.

I am excited though, this gun seems to be in really good shape. All the numbers match. I ordered some strip clips and a 440 round spam can. The previous owner included the bayonet, 2 full ammo pouches, a tool kit, sling, and oil container. The full package. Now the 10 day CA waiting period.

Anyway, any advise on this rifle?

Get some hearing protection. 7.62x54 is pretty dang loud when fired. Also, be sure your posture is right and you are braced for recoil.

If you don't have short arms, get some sort of stock extender.

Finally something done properly, time to punch holes in armor.

Get plenty of ammo, and gun oil.

If you see the receiver swelling and sweating after 10 rounds, take a short break.

Sell it and buy an SKS.

The SKS is a 10 round, semi-auto, cheap, battle-proven rifle that fires the most popular cartridge in the world [7.62x39]. Better for SHTF IMHO.

SKS's aren't cheap anymore, at least not out here in CA. They seem to go for $600-$700. I know the mosin isn't semi auto, but it will be a good truck gun. It was cheap.

Plus, the girlfriend happens to be into guns and wants to get into deer hunting. I'd like to hunt deer iron sights with the mosin if I can get good with it. Seems like a fun productive goal.

Thanks for the posts in this thread, folks.

Man, I should have done a search before starting this thread, I could have just added on to that one.

I pick up the old gal tomorrow, 10 day waiting period just about up...

Question for you Mosin owners. So, I'm very pleased and excited. I completely broke the gun down and cleaned all the metal parts. While doing this in amazement that this rifle is 75 years old, and all the parts look new. All the bluing is still there, everything cleaned and lightly oiled.

My question is on the wood stock. What do you folks recommend to remove the cosmoline?

Seems the advise I've found on the internet is to wrap the stock in paper towels, then a black plastic bag, and then put in on the dash of the car for a couple of hours.

Thoughts? Thought I'd ask.

On another note, after cleaning a rifle most of the day, and taking pride in the whole process.

I really think cleaning guns increases our testosterone levels.

I feel like saying this is my rifle, this is my gun...

More oil, preferably the wood type for furniture, not k-y jelly.

I've used gun oil on em to with no adverse effect, I sanded mine with lightweight paper.

I’d Buy That For A Dollar: The $39 Mosin-Nagant Bayonet

Horn, the bayonet is the only thing where the numbers don't match with this rifle. Everything else matches, the butt stock, the bolt, reciever, etc. I'm glad that a $39 bayonet was included with this purchase. The tool kit and ammo pouches is another $30 online as well. I bought it all with gun for $150. Feeling really good about this buy.

I'm getting fascinated and my mind is racing learning about the history of this rifle. She's pre-ww2, I've found, and made in the Tula aresenal. Most likely refurbished, but wonder if she's seen any real combat? If only rifles can talk..

A Russian-made SKS is about [Cdn] $225 and a case of ~1300 rounds is $260. I should buy a lot of 20 SKSs and make a trip to CA.

The cheapest SKS they had at the gun shop was $700. They had several, between $700-$800. They tried to sell my friend an american made one, synthetic stock, for $900.

They had no cases of 7.62x39 or 7.62x54r. Just 20 round boxes priced over $1 a round.

You should make that trip, you'd make a killing in CA.

Here in Idaho I can buy a handgun, fill out the paperwork, and 5 minutes later walk out with my new gun.

Shit, that's better than smuggling cocaine to New York from Costa Rica.

Do you have any street buyers, or only Ca. certified dealers?

Just leave the damn bayonet off when you're showing it off to your friends.

Now you need a matching long barrel Mauser.

Or the Swiss K31, which I have been salivating for awhile. These old surplus rifles are addicting!

BTW, I almost bought a Mauser from the same guy I bought this Mosin from. I didn't pull the plug, and he sold it to someone else. He's given me some good deals. He's a gun collector/nut who just loves buying, and selling, guns.

Hehe, yeah, that bayonet isn't very forgiving. :)

This will be an RV only gun. To take up to the mountains and have fun with.

Thanks Cebu,

Here's a informative documentary on the Mosin during WWII. There was such a shortage of them during the war, most likely if you own a Mosin manufactured during those years, it's seen combat.

I think I'll keep this one original. I hope the man who charged the front lines with it was a good dude. I guess I'm crazy to think like that, but to have a piece of history, means a lot to me.

The Swedes were nice and placed a disk on their Mausers to tell what you have, but you can generally tell also just by holding in up to the light to look at the depth of the rifling grooves, if they are smooth or torn up.

Torn up = shot when dirty or not stowed well, very shallow rifling has some heavier use on it.

I've shot most of the mil surplus stuff, the Swedish I picked up was by far the truest and consistent with a number of rounds put thru it. Some Nagants I've fired squirrel somewhat depending on them being hot or cold when fired.

If its matching numbers you've probably have got a decent barrel.

Hey Horn, thanks for this tip. I did the car dashboard tip and sweated out a lot of the cosmoline, then used k-y jelly and she looks great now. Slippery and sexy.

Actually I used some regular wood oil, but the finish is nice now. The wood oil was a nice touch.

I also ordered a head space guage, just to be safe. I was thinking it would really suck if this 75 year old rifle blew up on me the first time I pull the trigger. I will test the space before shooting this rifle.

I doubt you'll have an issue with a nagant,

if the bolt has a resistance to it when chambering a round your good to go for another 50 years at least.

I'll pay attention to that, when chambering a round. Thanks. I ordered the guage tester as cheap insurance. I read an article where a guy tested a mosin and it failed the test. Apparently, too much head space can cause the gun to shoot the bolt back at you, along with the gases, and could kill you.

Probably a non issue, but I wanted to test it anyway. I am learning.

I like that part in the video where he applied fiberglass to the tang in the back of the but stock.

You will see that on some of them where the receiver floats in there.

I've never heard of anyone being blinded, but a cheap pair of sunglasses are good insurance. The 54R is a pretty safe load in there, not too many hot loads available as far as I know.

Watch the receiver swell and push the holding rings around the stock tight after the first 10 rounds. You'll know its time to take a breather when your cannon becomes all steamy... ;) Oh man what a blast!

A bolt in the face would only add character.
