Bulletproof blanket seeks to shield kids during school shootings

The bright orange bulletproof Bodyguard Blanket is geared at protecting kids from danger during school shootings or natural disasters.

School shootings are a tragic reality. While much discussion has centered around prevention, ProTecht, a protective and safety products company in Oklahoma, has created a product it hopes kids will use in case such a tragedy strikes their schools. The Bodyguard Blanket (http://bodyguardblanket.com/index.html) is designed to offer a temporary shelter during dangerous situations, particularly school shootings.

While the Bodyguard is also built to help protect children from falling debris during natural disasters like tornadoes, much of the marketing around the product concerns the potential for school shootings. It's the reason the blanket was created in the first place.
Technically, the Bodyguard is bullet-resistant. It's made from the same materials used in military and law enforcement body armor.

Instead of having kids put on a flak vest, though, it puts the material in a form that can be folded up and then unfolded to create a body shelter. It has straps that help hold it in place like a backpack. ProTecht posted a video of the blanket undergoing a ballistics test (http://bodyguardblanket.com/pages/bgtvideo01.html), if you're curious about how it behaves under fire.

Bullet-resistant materials aren't cheap. The Bodyguard comes with a price tag just shy of $1,000, though ProTecht hopes to partner with schools and nonprofits to make it more affordable to buy in bulk. Even with a substantial discount, it will likely be out of reach for many school districts.

This isn't the first time we've seen a bulletproof product for the classroom. A bulletproof whiteboard (http://www.cnet.com/news/bulletproof-whiteboard-designed-for-classroom-defense/) that doubles as a shield appeared early last year. In a better world, no one would even have the impetus to dream up products like these. The Bodyguard Blanket will likely rouse a lot of differing opinions. Do you think it's excessive or practical? Yes, the new versions will have signs on them telling any potential shooters where they are allowed to shoot. Some places will be "no shoot zones".

WTF??? Really? This is what we've devolved into as a society? Take cover under a blanket and HOPE the bullet doesn't penetrate it?

This has got to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard. It doesn't even cover your whole body!! Our cultural mindset has got to change from hiding and cowering, to fighting back!!! Instead of giving kids blankets to hide under, allow teachers and staff to carry weapons in order to fight back!!!

If a tornado rips a building apart and there is falling debris, those mats are worthless.
No "mat" is going to stop a 1 ton chunk of concrete

Could you imagine a kid hiding under one of these hoping he or she doesn't get shot?

The fear agenda just jumped leaps with this product. Everyone is a victim and should be afraid. Nobody wants to fight back, or stand up for themselves anymore....unbelievable.

I understand this company wants to make money, but I keep waiting and waiting, for that time where things just snap. And hope we take back our country.

I am at a loss for words now. Great post madfranks.

That's one busy patent lawyer !!

I have to wonder how these things are deployed? Do they drop down from the ceiling as soon as a shot is fired? Does someone run down the hall passing them out to kids to hide under? Are there stacks of them in every classroom that the kids are supposed to build forts with?
Maybe the thought is, get every kid under the mats so when the SWAT teams storm the facility and fire concussion grenades inside, they can spray the entire area with bullets and collateral damage will be reduced.
...just a thought because I can't see how these mats are going to protect a kid from an intentional shooter looking to rack up a body count

Ok, let's think about this a min. "For safety" our school like many others now require the door to the class room to be locked "so the bad guy cant get in" the window in the door to be covered "so the bad guy does not see in and cant tell if there is kids in the room so will move on" now they want to make the kids safer by stacking 24 + or - mats up in the corner of the room about the height of a bed.
Ok, now we have how many teachers caught having "relations" with students ? Ok, I ran out of boxes and lines trying to do common core math to figure that out myself too, but anyway you see where I'm going with this. We now have a private room with doors locked and windows blocked as well as a bed "at the request of the school for students safety" this is for the kids safety though right?

what does it say about a society that is too stupid to tell the truth & deal with reality directly.

children being shot in schools by their school-"mates".

i remember having the runs before my first day of 6th grade. we had just moved to Denver.

i imagine it's worse if you're getting shot at ?

the schools where it's not happening = the schools that let teachers open/concealed carry.

most of the time, when i say "give the teachers guns & training", a get reactions of horror.

i would say this is related to one of the major Pitfalls of collapse.

people are unable to deal with it, whether "it" is school shootings or 9-11.

so they take comfort in the "official conspiracy theory", laugh nervously when one of us tells the truth about 9-11.

or they discard the working solution to school shootings, and work desperately with the gun-grabbers to come up with a "SOLUTION".

3 school shootings in the last 3 weeks - or the last 3 days ? hard to keep track.

however, that is what Collapse looks like.

look at the bright-side - better profit opportunity for educational websites suitable for home-schooling, e.g.
