Scientists at CSIRO’s Australian Animal Health Laboratory in Geelong are playing their part in a global effort to tame the highly infectious Ebola virus wreaking havoc in west Africa.Since the first live sample of the Ebola virus arrived in Australia last September, CSIRO researchers have been working in a high-security laboratory, one of only a few worldwide where scientists can work with live samples of the most deadly viruses, including Ebola, SARS and Nipah.

‘’Working with Ebola is a fairly new area for us,’’ research scientist Glenn Marsh said.

Dr Marsh said the Geelong team had started with pigs. And ferrets, which have a good track record with human respiratory diseases such as influenza, will soon follow.

‘’No one has ever put Ebola into a ferret, so we don’t know what will happen,’’ he said. ‘’But we will be looking for similar symptoms in the ferret to what you would see in humans.’’

There is no vaccination or treatment for the virus, although several vaccines are being tested.

The Geelong laboratory operates at the highest biosecurity level. Only when behind air-locked doors, can researchers in protective suits filled with oxygen work with ‘’level-four pathogens’’ – the most dangerous viruses because they remain without a vaccine or cure.

The CSIRO lab holds both types of Ebola. The original strain known as Zaire ebolavirus, which was first identified in Africa in 1976, is behind the latest outbreak. A second strain, Reston ebolavirus, was first described in America in 1990.
While the Zaire ebolavirus has a 90 per cent fatality rate in humans, Reston ebolavirus, which emerged from south-east Asia, causes illness but is not fatal.

‘’It would be great to find an animal model that has a similar response to humans, in that one strain causes disease and the other doesn’t,’’ Dr Marsh said.

A live sample of the Zaire ebolavirus arrived from America last September after ‘’a significant amount of paperwork’’, according to Dr Marsh.

Ok couple things, drawing from our past experience with a virus called Calisivirus. It is properly known as Rabbit Haemorrhagic Fever. That virus escaped their quarrantine. When they researched that one they did it on and island and it still escaped. This one is on the mainland. They wanted a virus to kill rabbits on mass but they decided to isolate the research from the target by putting it on an island. Granted the island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wardang_Island) is maybe only 3kms from the mainland probably making an escape easier but I'm not convinced.

Same kind of disease here, except it targets people and they do it on the mainland. hmmm.

To start with RHD is a level one pathogen, not a level four like Ebola, so it makes sense to conduct this research in facilities that are equiped to do so.

Where these facilities are is irrelevant.

Secodly, deadly virus' like Ebola have been around for a LONG time. Ebola is nothing new.

Before it was 'doscovered' Marburgs disease was known. Just because it was first isolated and named in the 70's doesn't mean the disease just spontaneously appeared out of nowhere, it could easily have been killing people sporadically for hundreds of years before being isolated and categorised.

The fact is, Viurs' have been killing humans for MILLIONS of years. Anyone that thinks these types of disease are new, are at best misinformed and at worst wilfully ignorant.

Anyone that thinks that the core of this research exisits to kill off the human race is jumping the gun. Will these diseases be used to kill of humans, maybe. Have virus' been deliberately released into the human population? Well there is no concrete proof of this. Have virus possibly been accidentaly released into the human population, maybe.

The fact is we haven't had a MAJOR bacterial or viral epidemic since the plague nearly four hundred years ago. These are the facts.

Humdinger’: Swine flu virus which killed half-million modified to 'incurable'

A controversial flu researcher has modified the flu virus responsible for the 2009 pandemic to allow it evade the human immune system. His lab’s previous works include recreating the Spanish flu and making a deadly bird flu strain highly transmittable.

The yet-to-be-published research by Professor Yoshihiro Kawaoka and his team is meant to give scientists better ways to fight influenza outbreaks, but gives chills to some people in academia, who are fearful that accidental release of the strain would result in a global disaster, according to a report by the Independent.

At his level-3 biosafety lab at Wisconsin University’s Institute for Influenza Virus Research in Madison, Kawaoka experimented with the H1N1 flu strain that was responsible for the pandemic in 2009, dubbed the swine flu pandemic by the media. [b]The work resulted in a mutated strain that is able to evade the human antibodies, effectively rendering humans defenseless against the virus.

“He took the 2009 pandemic flu virus and selected out strains that were not neutralized by human antibodies. He repeated this several times until he got a real humdinger of a virus,” a scientist familiar with Kawaoka’s research told the British newspaper.

“He’s basically got a known pandemic strain that is now resistant to vaccination. Everything he did before was dangerous but this is even madder. This is the virus,” he added....
