Dems Want New Tax On Sugar-Sweetened Drinks

Beverages sweetened with sugar or high-fructose corn syrup would be slapped with a new federal tax if three House Democrats have their way.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) proposed the Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Tax Act, or the SWEET Act, on Wednesday. Her bill would impose a one-cent tax for every teaspoon of caloric sweetener used in a drink.

DeLauro said the tax is needed because American adults and children are growing too fat. The tax would not only create a disincentive to buy drinks sweetened by sugar raising their price, but it would also use the tax revenue to fund programs aimed at helping people deal with diabetes and other health problems related to high sugar intake.

“People want to be healthy and they want their kids to be healthy,” DeLauro said. “But we are in the midst of dual epidemics, with obesity and diabetes afflicting our nation and the related, astronomical health care costs.”

“There is a clear relationship between sugar-sweetened beverages and a host of other health conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, obesity and tooth decay,” she said.

DeLauro’s office said the bill would “fund initiatives designed to reduce the human and economic costs of obesity, diabetes, dental programs and other health conditions” that come from consuming sugar-sweetened drinks. Her office said that would include prevention and treatment programs, research and nutrition education.

DeLauro says disease related to sugar-enhanced drinks have led to health problems that cost $190 billion to treat each year, much of which is paid for by taxpayers through Medicare and Medicaid.

Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) are cosponsors of the bill.

Also Wednesday, DeLauro called on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to recommend how much sugar people should eat each day, and require food manufacturers to reveal what percentage of that daily value is included in the food they produce.

The FDA has never created a daily value for sugar, which some have said is the result of pressure from the U.S. sugar industry. But DeLauro said a daily value guideline would help people make healthier food choices.

Which means that people will switch to non-caloric sweeteners instead. Yeah, that's going to make things sooooo much better...

Fake sweeteners are poison except sativa.

For me HFCS goes through like exlax, took me a bit to figure that out. Now I avoid everything with HFCS.

If its such a health issue then why not ban it outright? Fact is they could care less about your health, they just want another excuse to tax.

Now that we have national health care we have a right to control what you eat. No one saw this coming?

Exactly! Sugar and HFCS is health food compared to that, yes it is that bad!

Exactly, and not to mention HFCS is in so many different foods these days. Try to find a loaf of bread that doesn't have it.

At least this tax is supposed to pay for future health costs for the sheep who choose to drink the poison.

While sativa is pretty sweet in its own right... I think you meant "stevia". ;-)

Do you believe that? The money will be used to tighten their grip of power over us, while a token amount here and there to help the worst off for propaganda purposes.

Sativa is Marijuana--as in Cannabis Sativa. Stevia is the sweet stuff. I enjoy both of them, but beware of Truvia--they managed to turn even stevia into poison.

The stevia used with those things are processed into crystaline form which are also poisonous. Stevia is only safe in the pure leaf form or from concentrate.

Pure stevia has a licorice aftertaste. It's better to stick with raw honey in that case.

Well I'll be fucked, reading to much crap into what my kid is into. So the store bought stevia is crap also? I grew some a couple years back before the move and it got contaminated with cat hair so I tossed it. Is it worth it to grow? I have no clue what to do with it just know refined sugar is real bad and I have a household of consumers of it. Trying to get them to cut down is like shutting off a dam.

Yeah I know what you mean. Just find some raw honey and use that. I only really drink water anyways. Also avoid fruit juices since those are bad too. Fruit is only healthy when you eat it with the pulp and everything, unless its done from a very expensive juicer.

If you can get away from having sugar for 1 month (you'll feel like shit/tired BTW) you should be fine after that. Replace the cravings for sweet with fat/salt. And there's nothing wrong with fruit by itself if you need sweet.
