This is awesome discovery! The key is in the phrase: “The motion of this vibration creates a very subtle visual signal that’s usually invisible to the naked eye". In the past we were able to pick conversations inside a room, from long distances, by focusing a laser beam on a window of the room where the conversation was taking place. The vibrating window then would modulate the laser beam, which could then be demodulated reproducing the conversations. Sound proof windows-as are all the NSA windows-could defeat this detection method. However in this new technique the detection is not relying on sound vibration rather in the creation of a visual signal which cannot be defeated by a soundproof window. Brilliant! Now NSA has a problem in its hands with all those sound proofed windows ;-)
