H.L. Mencken (born 1880 - died 1956) was a journalist, satirist, critic, and Democrat.
He wrote the editorial below while working for the Baltimore Evening Sun, which appeared in the July 26, 1920 edition.
"As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and complete narcissistic moron."
---H.L. Mencken, the Baltimore Evening Sun, July 26, 1920

I've seen several quotes attributed to the man. He appears to have been very insightful. With that one he clearly nailed it.

Mencken is widely regarded as a cynic. My view of him is that he was a realist. He saw politics as a circus. He assigned equal blame for it to the people and the politicians. He had no illusions about how smart the 'people' were. I put him in the same league with PT Barnum who also had realistic views about how smart the people were. I share that view with both men.

I agree. He laughed at 'Representitive Government', and to call him a 'Democrat' seems a bit dishonet. He was as close as you an get to being an Anarchist, without calling himself one.

His book 'Treatise on Right and Wrong' was a good read for me a couple years ago. Many Anarchist of today say he is one of their inspirations. Osab has quotes from him in his sig.....
