It's a cheapo Chicago 3500 that I got for under $300, but it worked great. It still runs but isn't producing electricity. Is it even work getting fixed or can I do this myself?

One of mine did that.... I know a guy down town that re-flashed it. I'm sure one of the guys around here knows what that means . I forgot what he told me he did ....but google re-flashing a generator or re - magnetizing,

( he said it was pretty simple)

Ah you're a genius. I just had it running maybe 9 months ago so I think that might be the problem

but it is simple, there are two ways to do it, to save my typing the ways here is a link search page.

Tho even better gen sets can lose it,

easy fix as long as nothing physical wrong with the unit.

Excellent info! I got mine up and running but never really tested it, now I will. I never thought that it could just stop producing electricity.

Current flowing through a conductor produces a magnetic field.

Lenz's law states that if you have conductors moving across a magnetic field, an electric current will be "induced" into the conductors which produces its own magnetic field which resists the movement through the field. This is why it takes energy to turn the generator: the magnetic field produced by the current made from turning the generator actually resists turning the generator, proportionally to the amount of current flow being drawn from the generator. Drawing more current makes the generator still harder to turn.

This also implies that three things are required: a magnetic field, conductors, and motion relative between them. If you throw the generator from the roof, the conductors and the magnetic field are moving, but not relative to each other, so no current will be produced.

Generators use some of their own produced current in order to produce the magnetic field they need. There is no permanent magnet. SO if the generator has not been used for a long time, any residual magnetism in the generator's core will have faded away, and so there will be no magnetic field to get the process started. Field flashing as shown fixes this. Spinning the drill backwards produces a bit of electricity, which if fed back into the generator circuitry correctly will produce enough magnetic field to start the generating process. I cannot vouch for the method shown.

one possibility is to go to the power take-off (which may or may not be easy), removing the motor-like assembly that creates electricity, and replacing it with another generator/motor assembly.

for example, I have a grinder that has a 1/2 horsepower motor. run in reverse (power in, electricity hopefully out), well you get electricity out.

normally this falls into the category of 'engineering' and there are important details, e.g. circuit impedance match to 'mechanical' impedance. (often intermediated with a gear sub-assembly, a transmission).

if you dig into the generator, is there a single shaft that you can see that transmits the power ? Can you measure its diameter ?

fixing it is a noble cause ... though it can be time-consuming.

do you need a fan belt ?

Left all mine at the old place. Wish I brought them tho.

Hey Pluto? I put on my bathrobe and no matter how much I keep flashing myself at my generator it just wont start.....no wonder women don't pay any attention to me :(

I had one that run great but would not put out any elec , I remove the covers and guess what over half the wires had work loose I tighten all of the wires and it works great to this day . check all wires and tighten them it could be what's happen to yours

The best bet is not to buy Chinese genertors in the first place. Check yard sales for old generators that were pulled out of RV's, like Onans and Kohlers. Most run at 1800 RPM and will last 10 times as many hours as any Chinese generators. They usually sell for $300 to $500. I often search Craigslist for "Onan".

If flashing it doesn't work, you need to put the dick in the cylinder. Give it a stab!

Some sights should never be seen or "IMAGINED" ! ;D

Doing so maybe bad for ones mental well being and be worse than having a song stuck in ones head all day or longer, audio is bad enough! Audio visual could cause permanent harm!

Humm,

No mirrors in house ---Check!

Do you even have a reflection?

But you have silver and handle it, so that rules out some bad actors!

Humm?

Get any strong cravings on a daily or monthly basis, other than fondling your tp and sliver stash?
