In South Texas 18 wheeler end dumps were very common. The problem with them is that when you dumped, sometimes the whole rig would tip over, especially when dumping in soft ground.
The truck in the OP appears to have been designed to overcome that disadvantage at a very high cost.

I remember once a mexican truck driver decided to take a load of caliche and dump it in his driverway. Nobody would notice it missing. They did however notice the truck missing. The entire truck and trailer fell on it's side in the mexicans driveway.
