They were playing two block away at the Enmax center so i had to go check them out. i managed to talk my youngest into going with, so kind of a daddy daughter date thing going on i guess. Been awhile since i did one of those.

First off the music was totally awesome even from the opening bands fronting for AIC.

Then the trouble started down on the floor.

Security was more interested in busting the peeps smoking weed than dealing with the head bangers.

Shining flashlights into everyone's eyes in the first several rows so i yell out at them that i paid to come and listen to music not to get a bright flashlight shinning in my eyes.

No response.

Then the headbangers started their knock around thing. Rushing into each other and banging into those surrounding them.

I'm a solid 200lb and over 6' and they were moving me around like a rag doll, there was a bigger guy next to me and they were slamming him around too.

What a let down to go listen to some good music only to have a bunch of assholes ruin the experience.

Security did nothing about it. i grabbed the biggest guy there and pushed him as hard as i could and he comes back at me saying hey man it's not me and he points into a crowd of young guys just going nuts.

What to do? I put my daughter on my left side away from the bangers and stood my ground as best i could.

A young girl next to me was getting seriously hammered so she started throwing some well placed elbows to no avail. We are talking some big guys here all tanked up, from my size to 3-4 inches taller and easily 50-60 pounds heavier.

Anyone else have experience at an event that turns sour like this?

What to do?

Oh yea, we got a free beer shower or three thrown in for good measure.

Good thing we like beer, not as much though when it's on the outside.

Didn't expect this type of behavior as AIC is not a metal band, more alternative, grunge, rock.

Hell they were even banging around on the slower songs. WTF?

Clearly the western world is becoming more hostile, even in my own back yard.

I haven't waded into a mosh pit since I was in my early 20's. Honestly, it sounds like you just got too close to the action. The pit is only the front and center of the stage, why didn't you position yourself at the edges or rear of the crowd? And yes, the guy who plowed into you probably got pushed by someone else. Happens all the time. If the pit is dense enough, the best way out is to ask the guy next to you for a foothold, have him lift you and crowd surf your way out.

I was in a similar situation once, at the WHO concert in Cincy...yeah the same one where those people died. It was friggin insane.

I think it's pretty standard at most of these heavy metal shows. I used to be big into that scene years ago. Mostly small clubs. It was the thing to do back then, push each other around and hit each other, but today it seems pretty stupid. I used to come home black and blue from the mosh pits. We would have to go hit the bathroom mid show, just to take off our t-shirts and wring out all the sweat in them. Pretty disgusting to think about!

I was at this show, circa 1993 in SF. They were my favorite band back then. Funny, even in 1993 everyone hated cops! :)

Let's see, you went to a "service" for Satan and got pushed around by people possessed with devils. (characterized by great strength)
And you wonder why? and complain about it?

You took your daughter on top of all this? shameful in every respect!

So we went hiking in the mountains last Sunday and ran across a bear so yea we were in his territory, following your logic if he would have attacked us he would have been possessed with devils too, right?

w/e you are smoking, i want some.

I've been to rock shows before, the people in the pit are not "characterized by great strength", they're just kids moshing.

You were in the wrong place old steel, if you're just on the ring of the pit, it is most violent there.

Like the eye of the storm you should've seeked the center. :)

Sixth row, front and center, i was there for the music.

Obviously others were not.

Lucky for them it was at a public event and not on my street or at my home.

Then it gets personal.

You do not want it to get personal.

Still remember the old vet in Philly where I could hear a horizontal wall of people's backs crackin as they rushed thru the gates.

Hate mass gatherings anymore.

I'm a lounge lizard now.

Mass gatherings, mass graves?

Yeah, when I look back at any of those concerts. Is like I never did really like them anyway.

Though there was that one E.C. concert where I was so baked I only remember a couple minutes of it... lol!

For some strange reason I receive peace of validation when viewing decline of western civilization threads before bedtime.

Maybe its the Babylonian programming I received as a child?

Don't worry about me, mick

I've just had half a pot of Costa Rica finest blend coffee, and am feeling right as rain.

Why not just get some seats and avoid the main floor crowd altogether?

Exactly. Unless you're young and can handle the action, stay on the side lines. Maybe old steel didn't know what he was in for when he waded into the middle of the pit?

Alice in Chains is a relatively old band, maybe oldsteel was surprised at a 30yr. and older crowd moshing.

Which probably would be pretty putoffish.

Oh yea np, it was just annoying as hell when all you want to do is listen and enjoy the music.

in college i worked security at concerts a few times, organized by the guy who ran the Kenpo Karate club.

once i took it upon myself to throw out a guy that was throwing firecrackers into the crowd, it was a Foreigner concert. he was foot taller than me but i had some beef. got him about 50 yards and then a co-worker tackled him and dragged him outside the exit door.

but a Mosh Pit ... hopeless. as long as they're not throwing firecrackers, let them mosh.

Next time try a James Taylor concert. I don't think they mosh.
