“I don’t even have money for a cheeseburger,” said Iverson. Troubled former NBA basketball player Allen Iverson was seen begging for change outside of Lenox Mall in Atlanta. Several mall patrons reported a man with a disheveled appearance harassing them for change.

When security arrived, they were shocked to see it was none other than basketball legend Allen Iverson. Iverson was asked to leave the premises by mall security.

Jason Seaworth, who works security at the mall, says it was very difficult for him to ask Iverson to leave as he was one of his childhood heroes. “One of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do was asking my hero to leave the mall. It was very sad to see him in such a bad place. I really hope he gets his life together and somehow returns to prominence,” Seaworth stated.

Allen Iverson fell on hard times when his basketball career abruptly ended. Though the 76ers legend is currently bankrupt, he does have a $30 million trust with Reebok, which he cannot access until he is 55-years-old.

Blacks aren't capable of long term thinking/planning. This is no shock.

Unfortunately people don't understand basic biology so I'll be labeled an Evil racist for pointing this out.

huh? Can't plan? The guys got a $30 million trust fund. The problem is he needs bridging finance to get him to 55 yo. 16 years to go.

What happened to his career? Injury or scandal of some sort? Does say he blew through a lot of money but I wonder if he had one of those managers? You know the ones we hear about who have ripped of their employers millions. Falsified signatures and all that kind of carry on.

yes at 39 he should be assistance coach or something. Perhaps a nice job offer will come in for him now his story is out.

Iverson was a great basketball player, truly gifted but he was trouble on the court just as much as he was trouble off the court.

Those guys must have had a lot of friends I bet. Everyone is your friend when your loaded.

One of those guys had 11 children with 10 different mothers?? Really WTF? Was the guy not paying attention? I think the issue is one of possessions. Once you have them you don't want to get rid of them OR it is hard to organise disposal of some assets. I've been in that situation. Sometimes the best plan of action is to call in an administrator who can: get a deal with creditors and help dispose of assets that are hard to shift normally. Being vountary administered is a much better path than being forced and bankrupted. You might still get bankrupted but it would go a little easier for you.

but yes, many of those guys have been ripped off by their financial advisors.

Legal and financial problems

During the 1997 offseason, Iverson and his friends were stopped by a policemen for speeding late at night and was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon and for possession of marijuana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_%28drug%29). He pleaded no contest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nolo_contendere) and was sentenced to community service.[83]

On February 24, 2004, Iverson urinated in a trash can at Bally's Atlantic City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bally%27s_Atlantic_City) casino and was told by casino management not to return.[84]

On December 9, 2005 after the Sixers defeated the Charlotte Bobcats (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte_Bobcats), Iverson paid a late-night visit to the Trump Taj Mahal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trump_Taj_Mahal). After winning a hand at a three-card-stud poker table, Iverson was overpaid $10,000 in chips by a dealer. When the dealer quickly realized the mistake and requested the chips back, Iverson refused and a heated head-turning argument between him and casino staff began. Atlantic City casino regulations reportedly state that when a casino makes a payout mistake in favor of the gambler, he or she must return the money that they did not legitimately win by playing.[84]

Also in 2005, Iverson's bodyguard Jason Kane was accused of assaulting a man at a Washington DC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_DC) nightclub after the man, Marlin Godfrey, refused to leave the club's VIP section so Iverson's entourage could enter. Godfrey suffered a concussion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concussion), a ruptured eardrum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eardrum), a burst blood vessel in his eye, a torn rotator cuff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotator_cuff), cuts and bruises, and emotional distress. Although Iverson did not touch Godfrey himself, Godfrey sued Iverson for the injuries caused by his bodyguard. In 2007 a jury awarded Godfrey $260,000. The United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Court_of_Appeals_for_the_District_of _Columbia_Circuit) upheld the verdict in 2009.[85]

In a Philadelphia Inquirer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philadelphia_Inquirer) column published March 7, 2010, Stephen A. Smith (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_A._Smith) wrote that according to "numerous NBA sources", Iverson would "either drink himself into oblivion or gamble his life away", and that Iverson had already been banned from casinos in Detroit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit,_Michigan) and Atlantic City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_City,_New_Jersey). Smith also wrote that Tawanna, his wife of eight years, had separated from him and filed for divorce, seeking custody of their five children, as well as child support and alimony (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alimony) payments.[86]

In November 2010, Kate Fagan, a 76ers beat writer for the Inquirer reported that Iverson was "broke" and heavily in debt, "by all accounts except his own", and that a member of Iverson's family had previously contacted NBA teams about a contract for him, as he would not be able to pay that person without a contract.[87]

In August 2011, an Ohio man sued Iverson for $2.5 million in damages, claiming he was assaulted by Iverson's security guard in a 2009 bar fight in Detroit. The federal judge dismissed the case, finding no evidence that Iverson or his bodyguard struck the plaintiff, Guy Walker.[88] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_Iverson#cite_note-88)

semi-separately, as Iverson's not a "pure victim" here of course, but if he does have a gambling habit, then guess to what casino owning tribe most of his losses went (returned...) to? Ditto alcohol...

Yup, there are some white guys in that link too.

My son also told me that Allen Iverson had several childhood friends that he paid a living wage to so they could support themselves and their families.

He took the Steeler's to 6 play-offs, 2 Superbowl's, won 1
He had a pretty macho career, had fame and fortune...and now he looks like the guy that installs my cable TV, begging for scraps. At least he's working.

The soggy bottom boys were named after the location of which institution?

Hey people can be up and down. Sure it's easy to point out the shortcomings. I've done it. And we've all had hard times. And I've been stupid at times too. And it can be rolled back once it's done. I think it's expensive to be rich and or famous and you probably don't get much private time unless you really force it. A business man is only doing deals. Thats all. He know the state of the money all the time. The sports guy has a whole lot more going on and knowing the state of the money might be difficult. Also you hire an agent why not an advisor? There are that many guys getting cleaned that you think there is some kind of conspiracy going on between the leagues and the agents. Get picked by a team for the big leagues, get referred to an agent who might rip you off. Some kick backs, keep the money in the family, so to speak.

Anyway he must still have a few friends because he's finding couches for crashing on. There are plenty other average folks out there who are not being seen.

I doubt very much that the trust was his idea. He's just lucky someone thought of it for him, if he survives that long.

by the way, aren't there financial companies that offer to buy future trust funds for a heavy discount? Meaning, why doesn't he sell the trust for a cool $10 million today?

Or, maybe he's not broke and having him walk around the mall pretending to be broke makes a great distraction for the large segment of the proletariat that believes that professional sports is actually something that human beings can find real meaning in and should spend most of their time and energy paying attention to.

Could be lots of things, I guess.

I think in some circumstances a trust can be modified. I don't know how it's done but I think you need to get all parties to agree so it's probably more like creating a new trust in place of the old one. I don't think things like that are done lightly but in some circumstances I think it is done so people in need can access some funds. I know a couple people who live on trust funds because of their circumstances, disabilities. For them it's necessary to have a trust fund but there is very little wiggle room for getting extra money if needed. Also I've seen leeches hanging around thinking they can maybe skim some bucks once they hear there's a trust fund. Gonna scam some disabled peoples trust money from them. I've had a few run ins with a couple people like that.

At least now I get your angle. I'm not a sport fan unless it's cars. I did watch a few other sports but don't for a few years now. No time or interest. I got too much other stuff to do. I'm actually confused by peoples obsession with a sport or even worse a team. Some people are feral about it. Me? If I got a free ticket I'd go because it would probly be something work related and I could make some money. I don't bother even with our version of nascar anymore. The $ aren't as big here but its usually a million or couple multiples of per year for our AFL players. I don't know how most of those guys end up but I think they work like the rest of us. Usually selling something. Some of them are pretty mangled. Major league sports? I think it's a meat grinder.

But we're not talking about the fans, we're talking about the players and what happens to them. You got to admit it's one of about 2 or 3 ways an african ameri-can get out of where they were born. How many did and didn't slide back? There's a lot of players and we heard of a dozen or so.
