I woke up around 6:30 and found out about it. Apparently it shook pretty good where I am at in SF, but I slept right through it. There doesn't seem to be any damage that I know of yet. It was the biggest quake we've had since 1989, loma prieta.

(08-24) 07:49 PDT NAPA -- A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Napa County early Sunday, injuring dozens of people, sparking a fire at a mobile home park in Napa and causing extensive damage to buildings in and around downtown Napa, authorities said.

The quake, the largest in the Bay Area since the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989, struck 3 miles northwest of American Canyon at 3:20 a.m., the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was felt as far away as Chico and Fresno, the USGS said.

6.0 is pretty big quake man. The 1989 one was a 6.9.

Log?

30 times less than the 6.9 ?

definitely rusty, log base 10 of 9, 6.9 is 9.54 times stronger than Richter 6.0.

also very important - sort of like with fire -
ealier earthquakes tend to sort out the vulnerable structures.

e.g. 6.9 quake in 1989 knocked down -
brick walls
cinderblock walls
freeway built on landfill
etc.

6.0 is less likely to do damage, because 6.9 took out most of the vulnerable structures.

whereas a 6.0 in Southern Oregon will kill people, partly because there are lots of vulnerable structures, partly because idiots managing facilities think they don't have to worry about it "because their insurance covers it".

Yeah, and it's especially big to the more than 70 people injured, 3 of whom are in critical condition. Thankfully, no fatalities.

NAPA, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency for the part of California's wine country hard-hit by a large earthquake.

The governor issued a proclamation directing state agencies to help respond to the 6.0-magnitude quake that struck early Sunday about 6 miles from the city of Napa.

Napa Fire Department Operations Chief John Callanan says the city has exhausted its own resources extinguishing six fires, transporting injured residents, searching homes for anyone who might be trapped and answering calls about gas leaks, water main breaks and downed power lines.

Callanan says three people are reported to be in critical condition, including a young child who was struck by part of a fireplace and airlifted to a specialty hospital for a neurological evaluation.

Inspectors are evaluating damaged buildings, bridges and roads.

I agree, a 6.0 is pretty big when it hits so close to where people are living.

We're on borrowed time, I fully expect a 8.0+ on the west coast.

In the meantime, I'll settle for some nice flooding... :)
