Cops: Thug Golfer Arrested For Assaulting Fellow Duffers On West Palm Beach Course

A Florida duffer allegedly attacked two of his playing partners with his putter following a dispute over marking a ball, police allege.

Michael Rich, 48, joined a threesome Monday morning at the Madison Green Golf Club in West Palm Beach, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office report.

A member of the foursome, Anthony Nazzaro, told deputies that trouble began when “Michael told him to mark his ball then an argument started.” As the dispute escalated, golfer Roy Hall “tried to settle things down,” investigators noted.

But “Michael then swung his putter at Roy, striking his lower leg and breaking his putter,” a deputy reported. Rich then came after Nazzarro, “swinging the broken putter like a sword.” Rich (seen at right) struck Nazzarro on the wrist, causing a “large raised laceration.”

In an interview with cops, Rich claimed that Hall “ran up to him and pushed him with golf club.” Feeling threatened, Rich said he swung at the back of Hall’s leg because he “wanted them to stay away.”

Since he was judged to be the primary aggressor, Rich was arrested and charged with two counts of felony battery. After spending a day in jail, Rich was released from custody Tuesday on his own recognizance.

Argument Over Rules Of Golf Turned Violent
Cops bust pair of duffers for brawling on fairway

AUGUST 8--In the most embarrassing of crimes, two golfers are facing assault charges after they pummelled each other on a Pennsylvania course following an argument over rules governing puddles of water on the links.

According to a criminal complaint, Bryan Bandes, 42, and Robert Lee Harris, 63, had their good walk spoiled Sunday afternoon at the Springdale Golf Course when they began squabbling over the rules regarding “casual water.”

The duo, along with three other duffers, had their round interrupted by rain on the front nine. When play resumed, “There was a conversation and somewhat heated debate regarding the rules involving ‘casual water’ on the 5th green,” reported Trooper George Mrosko.

The dispute between the pair flared and allegedly turned violent in the fairway on the 7th hole of the public course in Uniontown, a city about 50 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Investigators allege that Harris swung a club at Bandes, striking the younger man “in the left forearm and top of the head.” Mrosko noted, “The Victim goes down from the blow on all fours.”

After Bandes got to his feet, he traded punches with Harris (both men ended up on the ground).

As detailed in the August 6 complaint, Harris was “struck in the left side of his face and his lower lip by the Victims fist.” Bandes suffered a mild concussion and “swelling and redness” to his forearm and the top of his head. Both men were treated in the emergency room of Uniontown Hospital.

Because Harris wielded a deadly weapon--the golf club--during the confrontation, he was charged with aggravated assault, a felony, and misdemeanor simple assault. Bandes, seen at left, was charged with simple assault.

The golfers are scheduled for an August 13 preliminary hearing before District Court Judge Robert Breakiron.

Section III, Rule 25-1 of golf’s rules addresses interference by “abnormal ground conditions” such as “casual water.” Had Harris and Bandes consulted the rule book before brawling, they would have learned that a player would have been allowed to move their ball out of a puddle on the green (as long as the new spot is not closer to the hole).

Cops: Golfer, 59, Broke Club Over Partner's Arm, Then Stabbed Victim With Sawed-Off 5-Iron

6/7 UPDATE: During an arraignment this afternoon, a District Court judge set Lott's bail at $100,000, ordered him to have no contact with the victim, and directed him to stay off golf courses

Proving again that golfers are the most volatile and violent athletes, a Michigan man was arrested yesterday after allegedly breaking a club over another duffer’s arm during a scoring argument.

Glenn Lott, 59, was jailed yesterday for felony aggravated assault with a weapon following the confrontation at the Westwynd Golf Course in Oakland Township outside Detroit.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, Lott and the 65-year-old victim were playing in a foursome yesterday afternoon when Lott “became enraged” when the victim questioned him about his score on the prior hole.

During the subsequent attack, deputies allege, Lott (pictured above) struck the older man with a Callaway 5-iron, “causing the club to break over his arm.” Lott then used the sawed-off club to “stab the victim in the same arm causing bleeding injuries.”

When the victim “fled in a golf cart to the clubhouse for safety,” Lott reportedly broke loose from two other golfers and gave chase in a second cart, screaming he was “going to get him.”

Lott, who lives about a mile from the golf course, was subsequently taken into custody at his residence and later booked into the county jail, where he is being held pending formal charges. Lott is a former Drake University football star who was a second-round draft pick of the Buffalo Bills in 1975 (though he never ended up playing in the NFL).

Deputies noted that they recovered half of the broken Callaway club in Lott’s golf bag (the other half was earlier found on the course’s 12th hole).

The man allegedly attacked by Lott was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel, and later received “numerous stitches for his injuries,” deputies reported.

Having played a lot of golf, I can tell you these stories are made up. Break a 5-iron over a guys arm?? Really? And a Callaway at that! LOL!

Yeah, physics dictate otherwise. The guys arm would be severed before that club bent in the slightest.

I hate golf, even though I'm a ringer until the fifth hole, before I get bored. We never let an outsider join us and once they have to wait for a us to finish a safety meeting, they don't want to.

Be careful while golfing. A guy I know had a ball bounce back after hitting a tree. The ball struck him in one eye, broke a bunch of optic bones, severed nerves, and he lost sight in that eye. Wear eye protection when golfing.
