On CNBC this morning. Sounds like someone that's been in the maritime industry with all the certs aught to be able to write his own ticket anywhere in the world. Captain anyone?

EE, thanks a lot for posting this.
I bump this thread because the maritime industry is booming right now. If anyone is interested, now's the time to pursue opportunities. Personally, I am sort of at a dead end at where I'm at. I need to get my tonnage up on my license in order to pursue some of these positions though, and I can't do that where I'm at. So, I'm getting my resume ready to see what's out there.
One opportunity, for example, is to be on a boat for 45 days straight. Then you get 45 days off. Well, you can live anywhere you want with that schedule. Fly to the boat, work 45 days, eat well, then fly back to the ranch in the midwest for 45 days.
Other opportunities include working the ships in the gulf, oil rigs. Those guys tend to work 30 days, with 30 days off, and make a lot of money. A captain can get paid over $1000 a day there. Imagine working 30 days and earning 30K. Then you get 30 days off to spend it on hookers and blow. :)

I keep thinking about those onboard desalination units and working on a boat in the Pacific Ocean. It's bad enough eating radioactive seafood, drinking and showering with the water could really mess a body up

Yeah, I pretty much posted this to get your attention. Sounds like you are working toward getting yourself into a good position to make some serious money and travel to where ever you want.
You hear all these people crying about not finding a job, but most of them don't really want to do 'real man' work.
There's a lot of companies out there that can't find skilled workers.

I did this sort of work for 20 years, good money away ect.
Not that I would spend it on Hitchs suggestions as had a family to raise and house to build.
Finished with all that now, in the end it became meaningless and seeing what happens to some people with a sudden influx of cash can be sickening.
It let me see that all the striving for cash amounts to a pile of dog crap in the end .
HT spent time like this and look what happened to him.....hehe
Dont let me stop anyone ,good money and time off is great ,just remember to show up for work and the first day and all the days are very very long but dont worry ,you get to go home in 29 days.......aaahhhhhh
yes the first day back after your break is a real DOWNER but on the other hand the day before you come home is a real UPPER,,,,,,,and so it goes on and on and on......

It's a different world today, EE. Young guys would rather stare at their cell phones than work with their hands. I did have a new guy this week though, who's got potential. We worked a 28 hour shift, and the guy kept up the whole time and was a big help. Sadly, he's an exception.
When talking about sailing offshore, being gone for 30 or more days, I think it's harder on women, than men. Men being gone that long. I figure I'd almost rather break up with the girlfriend before going, just to have the closure. Can't expect a woman to stand by you when you are gone that long, imo. That too is rare.
But, work is out there if you want it. Pays good, and you get a lot of time off. More time off, actually, than your office goon working 5 days a week with only weekends. But, that is my opinion anyway.
BTW, I was just joking about the hookers and blow. We get drug tested in this industry, and paying for sex to me seems pointless and a waste of money.
