Marine mammal deaths reported by The Marine Mammal Center (Sausalito, Calif) since June 2014 (domoic acid-related deaths excluded):

(12) Abscess: Collection of pus… in the tissue of the body
(1) Carcinoma: Cancer that begins… when altered or damaged DNA occurs to such an extent that the cells become transformed, and begin to exhibit abnormal malignant properties.

(6) Otostrongylus: Lungworms… in lungs or heart of seals

(4) Pneumonia: Inflammatory condition of the lung
(6) Prolapse: Latin for “to fall out” — Organs, such as the uterus, fall down or slip out of place… organs protruding through the vagina or the rectum

Agree, one member lives on the water and works on it also, bet he sees more seals, sea lions and otters, not counting the zillions of gulls, that want to "Gift" the top of his head and everything he owns, than he could count or care too day to day.

Bet he would report anything described in in the op in a nano second heartbeat.

I think around 1989 or so in a summer 70-90% of the seal population was wiped out by a virus in both the Baltic Sea and the west Atlantic North Sea coast of Sweden, but it was reported in media that the reason was build up of environmental toxins in the sea, most people believed that and voted in the environmental green party (it was a very fringe party prior to that and 4% of the popular vote is required for a place in the parliament). However seal hunting was banned. The seal stock recovered completely within a few years, and today they are stronger than ever, but especially the Baltic Sea fishermen are a dying breed, because the seals ruin their nets and decimate their catch. If people had been intouch with history and nature, they would have known that these die-offs have happened in the past with a 30-50 year frequency, but why listen to a crazy old fishermen, when the headlines screams of disastrous man-made holocaust of seals
