Americans love to barbecue, the problem with ALL barbecues is the fricken grill is a POS.

I remember the father of a girl I dated, and he was LOADED, use to barbecue on a hibachi, but he had a custom grill welded that was 1/4 inch wide and one inch deep. The meat was awesome because the grill cooked the meat because it retained the heat.

Just throwing it out there an an idea, because you could sell it as, don't throw out your barbecue, just get a grill that works, because the bulk of the barbecue is basically a bucket.

This sound like my idea of building a hot tub boat. Imagine a boat, with a hot tub, built in and you take your clients on a hot tub cruise. You could have a teak sun deck to dry off, and catch some rays, and a built in bar. Think of the bikini's that would attract.

stainless bar grating? Sounds like a good ideal!

But!

I would maybe worry about the metal out gassing at temp, and what temp the metal would start doing it, depending on the grade it is.

I think at grilling temperatures the metal may/could/would out gas.

Ever burn a SS pan and smell the Chromium burning off, not to mention the Manganese and nickel in most grades. Once I had a chance to build a bbq pit out of ss but chose not to do it because of the doubt of its safety, none of the minerals methinks would be very nice to eat.

I made my branding irons out of 1/4 by 1" thick mild steel. When you get them hot in a wood fire then touch them to a cow hide the hair is almost instantly burned off and they leave a mark that looks like new leather. A grate made like that would do a good job of grilling meat I think. The kids at some of the brandings I go to fry calf nuts on branding irons if there are extra irons then eat them.

Personally, my favorite is 1/4in quality steel rod and not the grates. Grates are a bitch to clean too.

I modify every cheap smoker grill I get but I wish I could upgrade the grate with the HD steel rod but it needs to be round to fit the smokin N grill.

Clean? Just let the fire clean it before you put the next batch on, adds flavour and persona to your steaks... :)

Some of the best Q I ever had came from being cooked in a hole in the ground. Rocks and gravel at the bottom and flat rocks on the sides, covered with tin roofing and with the dirt we dug the hole on top.

3 holes, pork, chix and veggies.

Best thing..it never cost a damn dime.

No no no. The rod iron on top doesn't make it flat.

Yep!

The heat will sterilize the metal.

I clean long term gunk buildup with a pit burnout when it gets too thick, ether you do it or the pit will do it for you when you do not expect it.....Like when you are cooking pricy quality steaks.

I prefer grating like the general posted about, my pit is 1/4" steel plate and all the grating is by 1/4" x 1" (everything is homemade) in the pit built all out of built 20 years ago had to replace the firebox bottom 3 times.

It lasts longer than expanded metal or wire.

Edit: Mine is a smoker, I do not cook much over direct heat in it, have a side grill for that, all made of 1/4".

We did something similar once at a beach cook-out. We wrapped individual servings of meat, potatoes, veggies & seasoning in foil, put some large rocks in the fire to get hot, dug a hole in the sand, put the rocks in the bottom of the hole, a little sand to level it out, all the foil packages went in, then bury the whole thing in sand. We let it cook for 3 hours or so, then we dug it up. Hella good stuff.

I wonder how you managed to convince the chix to do it there?

There is a distinction to be made between a grill and a smoker....BUT...quality grates make a huge difference in either application.

Have both both, both homemade and all out of 1/4" steel! The Generals thought of heavy grating is a good one!

SS might make the outside of it look purty but the steel is what gets the job done, in the way it's supposed to.

Damn wanna be's with their high dollar grills, lmao. They think they're actually BBQ'n!

I started smoking in the holes in the ground and worked my way up to a pull behind rig that could smoke and grill, 30 chix, 90 butts, 50 burgers, 50 hotdogs/sausages and more. Lost that in the divorce.

Today I have a cheapo Brinkman that I'm slowly modifying to make things easier and better but even on this POS I can still out do the fancy fuckers!

I have a big-ass chuckwagon grill, made in Texas. Don't really know how to use it though. Too big for me. It is so heavy I can hardly even pull it across the lawn. I have mixed results with it. I bought it off a lady whose husband had passed. She didn't have a manual.

I'd be happy to help you out with this, if ya want. There are some details I don't know yet but feel free to PM me with some pics and info or start a thread in the Lounge with the same. I'd really like to see what ya got and to help ya use it.

I would not trust anything below grade #5 s/s and maybe not even that, the grill surfaces can get way, way hot being just above the fire/coals.http://gold-silver.us/forum/clear.gif (http://gold-silver.us/forum/editpost.php?p=725597&do=editpost)
