No Matter What the Internet Tells You, Do Not Stick Your New IPhone 6 in the Microwave

A number of new iPhone 6 owners have apparently ruined their expensive devices by falling for the latest hoax sweeping social media.
The trick?

Someone is claiming the software that comes installed on Apple’s new gadgets contains a hidden feature which allows wireless charging in any standard kitchen microwave.

The hoax, which is making its way around social media and in forums including Reddit, 4chan and the photo hosting site Imgur (http://i.imgur.com/nVUsmjP.png), calls the fictitious feature “wave” and even includes a quasi-scientific explanation of how it works.

“iOS8 contains new drivers that interface with your device’s radio-baseband allowing it to synchronize with microwave frequencies and use them to recharge your battery,” reads the ad. “[Y]ou can now wave-charge your device by placing it within a household microwave for a minute and a half.”

The Internet flyer was also cleverly created to mimic Apple’s iconic minimalist styling making it appear nearly authentic:

At least a handful of Apple users turned to Twitter to complain the “wave” feature was not working and to share the aftermath of their mistake in pictures of charred iPhones, and small kitchen fires.
I tried putting an iPhone 5 inside of a microwave to do the #wave (https://twitter.com/hashtag/wave?src=hash) #ios8 (https://twitter.com/hashtag/ios8?src=hash) feature and it broke the phone Don't try this pic.twitter.com/iXhvw1eUxU (http://t.co/iXhvw1eUxU)

The hoax is similar to another one introduced by Internet trolls when Apple rolled out its iOS7 platform last year. That version tried to convince users their updated phones were waterproof.
“In an emergency, a smart-switch will shut off you the phone’s power supply, and corresponding, component to prevent any damage to your iPhone’s delicate circuitry read the hoax. (http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2013/09/24/some-iphone-users-were-duped-by-this-fake-advertisement-and-theyre-furious/)

If you are stupid enough to buy an Apple product, you are probably stupid enough to believe the rumor.

Did the moronic owners go and buy a new fanboy toy or are they waiting on crapple to give them a new one?

The geniuses who nuked their phones will go to the "Genius Bar" for a new one, of course.

I really need to proofread before submitting.

yes I think we should all just be quiet. Don't say anything. Do your bit to help reduce the apple count. Instead of a water challenge, perhaps they can do a face smash or something.

Then for sure they can get a round of applause at the genius counter when they buy their next one.

Perhaps if someone had told these people sooner that the twitter feed they were following touting the benefits of drying one's hair in the microwave was ALSO a hoax, this tragedy could have been averted.
