It’s an exclusive property that’s fit for a king or queen – or a wealthy buyer who is looking to live like the Lannisters from the hit series Game of Thrones.
Historic Butron Castle, in northern Spain’s beautiful Basque Country, is being sold in an online auction with a starting bid of £2.7m.
Built by the Butron family in the Middle Ages, the property has reception rooms spread over five floors and it even comes with its own dungeon, giving its future owner or owners the perfect place to banish visitors who misbehave.
All the rooms in the protected heritage building are furnished, including its chapel, chimney hall and private library.
The majestic castle also has its own wine cellar, elevator, natural water well, courtyard and four turrets that are perfect for surveying a make-believe kingdom. The building has two bathrooms, a kitchen, outdoor parking and heating.
With a total floor space of 25,800 square feet, the medieval castle is surrounded by eight acres of parkland and located next to a small river 12 miles north of the city of Bilbao.
BNP Paribas Real Estate is organising the auction for the INBISA business group, the castle’s current owner.
According to the listing, it is the only ‘romantic style’ castle on sale in Spain and is in ‘excellent condition’ despite being centuries old.
The auctioneers are marketing it as a ‘monument of romanticism’ that would be an ideal purchase for a private investor or investment fund.
It is likely the castle and its grounds would be used for private events or public tours, rather than a family home in a fairy-tale setting.
Butron Castle was constructed in the 14th century, restored in the late 1800s and refurbished again from 1990 to 1994. Its grounds are open to the public but the building itself is closed.
