The ash cloud spread out immediately in every direction shooting thousands of feet into the sky before covering a two square mile area in dense, choking dust

If they where any closer that Pyroclastic Flow would have burned the air in their lungs and sealed them shut ....they would have died like those statues of Pompey we all see.

That type of blessing is hard to comeby.
